Rather than a comprehensive retrospective, Lifestyles of the Broke and Obscure collects most of the material from the waning years of Wolfsbane's career, as well as live versions (recorded for 1993's Massive Noise Injection) of the best work from their Def American period ("Money to Burn," "Kathy Wilson," "Loco," etc.). Perfectionists are bound to sneer at this less-than-perfect retrospective, but who are we kidding? Hardly anyone even remembers Wolfsbane. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia 2 LP's on 1 CD: LIFESTYLES OF THE BROKE & OBSCURE contains WOLFSBANE (1994) and MASSIVE NOISE INJECTION (1993). Wolfsbane CD discography The British metal act's final studio album, originally issued in 1994. Castle. Still reeling from their dismissal by Def American and their inability to further their career despite constant press adulation, Wolfsbane grit their teeth and carried on as best they knew how. Signing with Bronze Records, they entered the studio in late 1993 with producer Simon Efemy (Paradise Lost, the Wildhearts) to record their eponymous third album, released in February 1994. A typically hyperkinetic set of not-so-memorable metal anthems, the album garnered the usual media support but went absolutely nowhere with the fans -- no thanks to singer Blaze Bailey, who announced his departure to join metal legends Iron Maiden shortly before the album's release. With that in mind, album highlights like "Lifestyles of the Broke and Obscure" and "Wings" (featuring the words "If I had wings, I'd fly") sound downright prophetic. (Bronze Records later issued a limited-edition double-disc version of the album containing some outtakes and leftovers and neatly wrapping up Wolfsbane's defunct career.) ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Personnel: Blaze Bayley (vocals).
Live Fast, Die Fast Live Fast, Die Fast CD (1989)

Wolfsbane albums Wolfsbane were the first English band signed by Rick Rubin's Def American label, and the ever patriotic British press immediately began touting the band as the next big thing. Famous for raw, organic production jobs which revitalized many a career, Rubin completely botched the band's 1989 debut, Live Fast Die Fast, resulting in a flat sound that squelched the band's raucous metal aggression. All the tracks on side one are winners, but only "Money to Burn" and "Killing Machine" actually pack any serious punch, leaving the rest ("Manhunt," "Shakin'," "Fell Out of Heaven") wallowing in unfulfilled promise. The first single "I Like It Hot" sounds rather forced, and the rather catchy ballad "Tears from a Fool" is simply out of place, but closer "Pretty Baby" manages some enthusiasm. Though future albums would correct ...
