Yakuza albums The third album by Chicago art-metal quartet Yakuza features a number of guests, including Minsk bassist (and highly regarded producer) Sanford Parker, pianist Jim Baker, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, and Mastodon guitarist Troy Sanders. The production by Matt Bayles, who's also worked with Isis and Botch, takes them into a more psychedelic direction than their previous release, 2002's thrashy Way of the Dead. "Monkeytail" is built around a dubby, post-punk groove atop which vocalist Bruce Lamont plays echoey, ...

Yakuza discography The fifth studio album by Chicago art metal band Yakuza is their debut for the Canadian label Profound Lore, home to many other acts with a more expansive vision of heavy music than that of their peers on, say, Roadrunner. Minsk bassist Sanford Parker produced Of Seismic Consequence (he also worked on Yakuza's 2007 album Transmutations), giving it a full, organic sound that suits the band's thrashy yet psychedelic music. Opening track "The Ant People" is a ...

Yakuza CD discography The fourth Yakuza album, produced by Minsk bassist Sanford Parker, is more psychedelic and tribal than its predecessors. In some ways, it sounds like a meeting ground between the Chicago group's previous work and their producer's band (on whose album The Ritual Fires of Abandonment Yakuza frontman Bruce Lamont played saxophone). When the band decides to return to thrashing savagery, though, as on "Praying for Asteroids" and "Steal the Fire," they're as capable as ever of boosting ...

Yakuza albums This album starts off with Tuvan throat singing, tribal drumming, and a tenor saxophone incantation that sounds like German free jazzer Peter Brötzmann in one of his more meditative moments -- and that's all just in the first minute. So in other words, you know right off that this is no ordinary metal album. But soon enough, the band shifts into an odd-time math-thrash groove that makes it equally clear that Yakuza knows how to rock, too. ...

Like Black Holes in the Sky: The Tribute to Syd Barrett Like Black Holes in the Sky: The Tribute to Syd Barrett CD (2008)
CD $8.04 Buy It  Details
Yakuza CD discography Dwell Records specializes in the nexus point where grunge, noise, psychedelia, and, most importantly, metal meet. Fitting then that they would release this tribute comp to Syd Barrett, the madcap wonder boy who in the late '60s had a hand in inspiring all those genres. The collection features artists who run the metal gamut. Stoner legends Pentagram deliver a dynamic "Flaming" while trance-metallers Jesu drive "Chapter 24" deeper into the cosmos than Pink Floyd ever did. Prog-metal kings Yakuza tackle "Lucifer Sam" while noisy underground dwellers Stinking Lizavetta lay a guitar-heavy "Matilda Mother." Some versions are better than others, but taken as a whole LIKE BLACK HOLES IN THE SKY proves the modern reach of Barrett's vision and the breadth of his songwriting. Tributee: Syd Barrett. Personnel: Janne Westerlund (vocals, guitar, banjo, percussion); Ryan Lipynsky, Aaron Gregory, Bobby Liebling, Yanni Papadopoulos ...
