Nomadic Pursuits Nomadic Pursuits CD (2010)
CD $11.79 Buy It  Details
Yawning Man albums As heard on such releases as Kyuss' Welcome to Sky Valley, Queens of the Stone Age's self-titled debut full-length, and just about any of Brant Bjork's solo releases, jamming has always been an integral part of the "desert rock scene" of California's Palm Desert. And the roots of these spacious and trippy jams can be traced back to a specific band, Yawning Man. While not well-known outside of the area, Yawning Man is often listed as an important early influence on the aforementioned bands/artists. And although the group never got around to issuing any recordings during their first go-round in the late '80s, come the early 21st century, original members Gary Arce (guitar), Mario Lalli (bass), and Alfredo Hernandez (drums) resuscitated Yawning Man, and began finally issuing albums. 2010 saw the release of their third full-length overall, Nomadic Pursuits (which also features keyboardist Mathias Schneeberger), which turns out to be an all-instrumental affair, chock-full of meandering jams that would probably serve as the perfect soundtrack for frolicking throughout the desert...if you were in an "altered" state of mind. As a result, tracks such as the album opener, "Camel Tow," as well as "Far-Off Adventure" and "Ground Swell" manage to somehow come off sounding both pre-planned and improvisational. Forget about succinct song structures here -- Nomadic Pursuits is all about kicking out the jams...and Yawning Man is happy to oblige. ~ Greg Prato The classic lineup of GARY ARCE, MARIO LALLI and ALFREDO HERNANDEZ reunite at the Donner & Blitzen studios (recorded my Mathias Schneeburger) to create their latest album. Just in time for a one month European tour (June-July 2010) through Germany, Belgi Personnel: Gary Arce (guitar); Mathias Schneeberger (keyboards); Alfredo Hernández (drums). Recording information: Donner & Blitzen Studios.

Yawning Man discography Vista Point culls Yawning Man's full-length release Rock Formations and EP Pot Head (both originally from 2005) on a single 67-minute disc. It makes for a record that packs quite a punch. "Desert Rock" is the name of Yawning Man's game: twangy surf guitar courtesy of Gary Arce (of Ten East and Fatso Jetson fame), stoner rock drumming courtesy of Alfredo Hernandez (of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age fame), and a Krautrock-inspired, pummeling, we-ain't-ever-gonna-stop-this-groove attitude. There is also a subtle psychedelic element in the background textural guitars layered fuzz-over-fuzz. Bass duties are fulfilled by Mario Lalli on what was Rock Formations (tracks one-ten) and Billy Cordell elsewhere, but both simply play an anchoring role. The stars of the show are definitely Arce's languid guitar lines and Hernandez's leaded beats. The music may be psychedelic and (very) cinematic, it still remains sharply focused and to the point. Highlights include "Perpetual Oyster" (one of the most spaghetti western-sounding tracks), "Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway" ("Autobahn," anyone?), and "Buffalo Chips," which might as well be Neu! gone "Interstellar Overdrive" with the ghost of Duane Eddy. Slow, lyrical, and repetitive, "Manolete" even adds a touch of post-rockish melancholy to the set. And the booklet offers a handful of stunning desert photographs on quality glossy paper, justifying a physical-not-download ...
