Good as Gold CD (1983) Top Seller
Red Rockers music CDs Good As Gold was a giant leap forward for New Orleans' Red Rockers after Condition Red. No longer satisfied with being merely Clash imitators, they moved towards a more accessible sound while maintaining their punk edginess. Good As Gold is quick and tight power pop, fast paced (most songs clock in under four minutes), lean, and consistent from start to finish. The opening blast "China," with its bouncy rhythm and catchy chorus, deservedly became a modest hit. The title cut follows in that vein, a cautionary tale on the trappings of materialism. The highly danceable "'til It All Falls Down" could have been a club hit, but during the synth-pop era probably it never had a chance. Red Rockers voice their political concerns on "Change the World Around" and "Home is Where the War Is," the latter tune a ringer for early U2. With nary a false step in its 36 minutes, Good As Gold was a terrific record that pointed to a promising future. ~ J.P. Ollio

Schizophrenic Circus CD (1984)
Red Rockers discography On their final album, the Red Rockers abandoned the stripped-down power pop of Good as Gold, adding elements of folk-rock and British new wave. This may have been due to a change in guitarists or the influence of bands like the Alarm and U2. Regardless, Schizophrenic Circus' soaring guitars and harmonies evoked the Byrds circa 1966, particularly on a cover of Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction," a song whose message was certainly lost on its audience by 1984. A version of the Hooters' "Blood from a Stone" was more apropos, protesting against taxation and economic stagnation. Of the original songs, nothing here quite measures up to "China," but a few tunes are noteworthy. "Shades of '45" offers a unique view of World War II -- from the cockpit of the Enola Gay -- a subject rarely broached in pop music. Sonically, "Burning Bridges" recalls Revolver-era Beatles with its lock-step drumming and psychedelic vocal effects. The gorgeous ...

Good As Gold/Schizophrenic Circus CD (1995)
Red Rockers CD discography Few bands have pulled off a near-total stylistic about-face with the grace of the Red Rockers. This New Orleans-based band was once the most stridently political punk band in America-the name refers to leftist ideology, not fashion choice. Red Rockers' under-appreciated 1981 debut CONDITION RED was as passionate and doctrinaire as the first Clash singles, which the album resembled musically as well.
1983's GOOD AS GOLD is something entirely different-and even better, featuring a new, smoother, much more poppy sound very similar ...
