Lost at Sea Lost at Sea CD (2006) 4.4 stars
CD $15.09 Buy It  Details
2cents music CDs The early 21st century has seen a multitude of bands that temper elements of extreme metal (growled vocals, Godzilla-esque riffing) with bits that make crossover success a real possibility (sweetly sung choruses). You can add the Los Angeles outfit, 2cents, to the ever-growing list, especially with their 2006 debut for Eastwest, Lost at Sea. Overseen by one of rock's most respected/renowned producers, Matt Hyde (who has worked with everyone from Porno for Pyros to Slayer), Lost at Sea offers a faithful snapshot of what radio-ready metal circa 2006 sounds like. Songs like "Victims of Pop Culture" and especially the melodic "Symptoms for Side Effects" would sound simply exquisite blasting out of your nearest Hot Topic store, while the group also offers a now-mandatory tribute to late Pantera/Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell, "A Song for Darrell Abbott" (which -- surprise, surprise -- begins quietly, before exploding in rage). ~ Greg Prato Audio Mixers: Matt Hyde ; Edmond Monsef. Recording information: Ameraycan Studios, North Hollywood, CA; Hydeaway Studios, Van Huys.
Dress to Kill Dress to Kill CD (2010)
CD $11.69 Buy It  Details
2cents discography It's hard to pin down exactly what constitutes a band being considered "nu metal." As cases in point, artists such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, and Static-X all fell under the umbrella of nu metal at one point or another. So it seems to mean that it can include those who are grunge revivalists, heavy metallists, rap metallists, melodic metallists, or any number of things. And after hearing the sophomore effort from 2Cents, 2010's Dress to Kill, it quickly becomes clear that the group incorporates all of the aforementioned "nu metal possibilities" into its own style/approach. And it also makes sense why it would, after you take a gander at the bands that 2Cents have toured with -- including the aforementioned Korn and Static-X. The only thing is...guess nobody told the lads in 2Cents that nu metal saw its peak a decade before Dress to Kill dropped. Regardless, you can easily match 2Cents' tunes to the appropriate category -- "Now You Know" represents their grunge side and "Dressed to Kill" is based in rap-metal, while "The Hollow" and "Get What?" tread upon unmistakable headbanging terrain. Could a nu metal revival be on the horizon? If it does go down, 2Cents could come off looking like a group of Nostradamuses, and could easily be leading the charge. If not, they could very well ...
