Solo CD (2002)
Maurizio Brunod music CDs A good choice of tunes, catchy melodies, and sympathetic solos combine to make this a surprisingly appealing album, despite its simplicity. Brunod has a knack for penning tunes with hooks, the sort that somehow beckon the listener to come back for more. In this sense, the compositions by Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Bill Frisell fit right in, although the latter's suffers somewhat from an inherent atmospheric quality. Each of the tracks was recorded live at festivals or clubs. A couple include bassist Guido Marchegiano, whose contributions are secondary to the guitarist. Brunod does not impress with technique as much as through his touch, expression, and concept. Despite a modest approach, he is still a strong presence, able to bring together a little rock rhythm for his stirring version of Coleman's "Lonely Woman" and a diversity of styles elsewhere (even including some down-home spaghetti western twang). His lazy and unusual take of Coltrane's "Naima" converts it into something new without changing a note. Although this recording is a compilation, it is well paced, even if it is a bit short. It highlights a skilled guitarist with a strong identity who is not afraid to be occasionally adventurous. For a mostly solo album, this one does a good job at maintaining the ...

Blue Gulf Stream CD (1999)
Maurizio Brunod albums The unusual combination of two guitars and voice could, under the right circumstances, lead to some unusual results. In fact, the liner notes refer to this short recording as "a cheeky, severely arrogant project." Actually, it is surprisingly mild. It seems to be a largely collaborative effort among guitarist Brunod, electric guitarist Claudio Lodati, and vocalist Pascale Charreton. Lodati has participated in projects similar to this, but with greater success. This one meanders a bit, the sounds a touch ethereal. Most of the pieces were written or arranged by the guitarists, but along the way, they reinvent Iranian, Jewish, and Mongolian tunes. Brunod is equally effective on electric and acoustic guitars and percussion, while Charreton plays it fairly straight. Lodati is a strong soloist, though he is more restrained here than usual. ~ Steve Loewy

Melquiades CD (1999)
Maurizio Brunod discography This one has all the makings of a classic: a small, well-rehearsed group that has recorded together several times before; a "superstar" guest artist, saxophonist Tim Berne; one of Italy's leading jazz trumpet players, Alberto Mandarini; original compositions by group members; and classy packaging. Unfortunately, the CD disappoints somewhat. Although there is some good blowing -- notably by Berne and Mandarini -- there is a dullness throughout the arrangements that dampens the creativity. Perhaps it is the "seventies English rock" influence noted in the liners. The rhythm section of guitarist Maurizio Brunod, bassist Giovanni Maier, and drummer and de facto leader Massimo Barbiero perform professionally enough; but there is too much emphasis ...
