Mingus Epitaph Rhythm Section albums Producer-arranger Gunther Schuller conceived OUT OF THE BLUE(S) as a musical extension of the dual-bass arrangements of Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton and Charles Mingus. The inspiration for OUT OF THE BLUE(S) came to Gunther Schuller during a recent European tour where he led a large jazz orchestra in performances of bassist Charlies Mingus' EPITAPH. Schuller was particularly inspired by the work of that band's rhythm section. The Locke-Wilkins-Formanek-[Ed] Schuller axis is reunited on this recording, augmented by drummer Ronnie Burrage. The interplay between bassists Formanek and Schuller, plus the writing and improvising skills of each participant mark OUT OF THE BLUE(S) as an exemplary modern jazz session.
