Many of these part-songs deal with the awesome beauty and violence of the Russian landscape. Though Dargomyzhsky's "The Storm Has Wrapped the Sky in Darkness" is strophic in form, repeating its music in all four verses, its initial running notes capture the image of a whistling snowstorm. Similarly, the remarkably long-lived Cesar Cui (1835-1918), succinctly conveyed the still image of a decaying, marshy forest in the surprisingly rich, late Romantic harmonies underlying his languid "Hidden Beauty."The two choral songs by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) were written within the last six years of his life. "The Golden Cloud," a charming choral miniature, and "The Nightingale" are both tales of leave-taking. The first is set in very simple four-voice chorale style; in the second, different voice parts carry on a dialogue with the full ensemble, and the music is tinted with lovely modal inflections.
