Millions Too Many Millions Too Many CD (2007)
CD $15.15 Buy It  Details
Northern Chorus music CDs A Northern Chorus have always pulled off the not-so-easy trick of making indie pop with orchestral strings that sound neither pompous nor out of place. In other words, despite the presence of cellos, violins, and violas, the Canadian quintet's songs sound effortlessly catchy, inventive, and, well, like indie rock. On THE MILLIONS TOO MANY, original violinist Erin Aurich returns to the line-up, and the arrangements are as magnetic as ever. Orchestral pop rarely sounds this unforced. Lyricist: Pete Hall. Personnel: Pete Hall (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, harmonica); Alex McMaster (vocals, cello); Erin Aurich (violin); Graham Walsh (piano); Owen Davies (bass guitar). Recording information: The Barn, Caistor Centre, Ontario, Canada (08/2006).
Spirit Flags Spirit Flags CD (2003)
CD $13.29 Buy It  Details
Northern Chorus discography A Northern Chorus, a sextet from Hamilton, Ontario, is among the crop of bands who are trying to keep the spirit and sound of the late-'80s/early-'90s shoegaze movement alive. For the most part, they succeed. Just like groups did in the old days, A Northern Chorus trots out layers of gauzy guitars, enigmatic and hazy vocals, fuzzy rhythms, loud/quiet dynamics, and a resigned, somewhat blissed-out, melancholic feel. But unlike most of the bands interested in shoegaze, A Northern Chorus writes good songs. Like their main inspiration, Slowdive, the songs would be good even without the effects and great clouds of sound. The band also helps their case by augmenting their atmospheric guitars-bass-and-drums shoegaze sound with flute and violin for maximum dreaminess and added texture. They don't rely on pure noise or post-Radiohead weirdness to get their point across. Spirit Flags washes over you like a warm wave in an ocean of guitars and violins and quietly aching vocals. It proudly stands up to classic shoegaze albums as if it were there at the very beginning. Anyone who ever bought a Slowdive record should check it out. The line for the time machine begins here. ~ Tim Sendra Recorded in August 2002. Owen Davies (bass); Marshall Bureau (percussion). A Northern Chorus: Pete Hall, Stu Livingstone (vocals, guitar); Sarah MacGregor (violin, viola); Julie MacDonald (flute, background vocals);

Northern Chorus songs Whether it was caused by yet another lineup change (newer members' Alex McMaster (cello) and Steve Hesselink (percussion), who add to the stellar rock), or an urgency to put atmospheric guitar effects back on the map, the difference from Spirit Flags to Bitter Hands Resign is virtually night and day. With Spirit Flags, A Northern Chorus were comfortable with their dream pop, but they weren't able to lift themselves from mediocrity by simply following the conventions laid down by the original shoegaze bands. The Ontario group's third album is a noticeable improvement, and melds the extended pieces and touching vocals of Sigur Rós with the emotional rock of Appleseed Cast's Two Conversations. A Northern Chorus seem more confident and solid, as they allow their works to drift unhurriedly, yet they always retain a firm command of its direction. And, as if to show A Northern Chorus don't always need to hide behind their instruments, "This Open Heart" ends solely with vocals and lyrics that, like much of this record, are as fragile as snowflakes. ~ Kenyon Hopkin Audio Mixers: Graham Walsh; Northern Chorus.
