Leaders discography In the late 1980s and early '90s, the Leaders was a part-time all-star group consisting of trumpeter Lester Bowie, tenor saxophonist Chico Freeman, altoist Arthur Blythe, pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Don Moye. The new Leaders only retains Freeman and McBee, with trumpeter Eddie Henderson succeeding the late Bowie and altoist Bobby Watson, the lesser-known but talented pianist Fred Harris and drummer Billy Hart taking the places of Blythe, Lightsey and Moye. While Bowie in particular is missed, Eddie Henderson does a good job of filling in, and the new Leaders are of the same high quality as the original group. The music, all originals from bandmembers, ranges from advanced hard bop to hints of the avant-garde, from bluesy material to a pair of duets by Freeman and McBee. Watson and Freeman in particular consistently take solo honors although all of the musicians fare well. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow Composer: The Leaders. The Leaders: Chico Freeman (sopranino saxophone); Bobby Fisher (alto saxophone); Eddie Henderson (trumpet); Fred Harris (piano); Cecil McBee (bass guitar); Billie Hart (drums).

Out Here Like This Out Here Like This CD (1989)

The all-star band accurately called the Leaders (trumpeter Lester Bowie, altoist Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman on tenor, soprano and bass clarinet, pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Don Moye, although he was always a sideman) developed its own group sound. Performing inside/outside music, the band's Black Saint release features originals by Freeman, Lightsey, McBee, and Bowie, plus an obscurity. The trumpeter's straight-ahead "Zero" is a high point, and all of the musicians play up to their potential. It is particularly interesting to hear Bowie and Blythe excel in this fairly conservative (for them) setting. ~ Scott Yanow Recording information: East Side Studios, New York, NY (02/18/1987-02/19/1987). Unknown Contributor Role: Lou Holtzman. The Leaders: Chico Freeman (tenor & soprano saxophones), Arthur Blythe (alto saxophone), Lester Bowie (trumpet), Kirk Lightsey (piano), Cecil McBee (acoustic bass), Don Moye (drums). Personnel: Chico Freeman (bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Arthur Blythe (alto saxophone); Lester Bowie (trumpet); Kirk Lightsey (piano).
