||Don Haven & the Hi-Fi's CDs (1991) |
Don Haven CD discography This Collectables disc includes only two tracks from the group it's titled after, instead compiling material from six other rockabilly bands active around New York during the '50s. All of the material is pop-slanted '50s rock & roll, closer to a twangy sock-hop than anything recorded at Sun Studio. The five tracks from Charlie Gracie (the best-known artist) are solid period pieces, and the Mike Pedicin Quintet's cover of "Shake a Hand" is pretty good as well -- though Pedicin also contributes the limpid "Disc Jockey's Boogie." After umpteen volumes of That'll Flat Git It!, these tracks may sound good to obsessive collectors, but anyone else with half an interest in rockabilly should avoid them. ~ John Bush
