Oh Land CD (2011)
Oh Land albums Nanna Oland Fabricius spent her childhood studying ballet, eventually hanging up her pointe shoes for good when a back injury forced her to stop dancing. Looking for another way to let off creative steam, she rechristened herself Oh Land (an Anglicized spelling of her middle name) and turned to music. On her international debut, Oh Land shrugs off the strict rules of ballet and embraces the open-ended world of pop, creating an "anything goes" mix of club, dance, and nocturnal electro-pop. Like Lykke Li, she sometimes comes across like a flower child in a DJ booth, blissfully grafting together genres that may not be entirely compatible. But Land's combinations always work, whether she's layering spoken word verses over disco beats on "Voodoo" or splitting the difference between Motown, tropicalia, and synth pop on "White Nights." This sort of glittery, eclectic dance music already has a number of torchbearers, and Oh Land doesn't rewrite the rule book as much as join the ranks of La Roux, Little Boots, and Janelle Monáe. But that doesn't keep her debut album from churning out a number of intelligent club anthems, with lead single "Sun of a Gun" -- a four-on-the-floor breakup anthem featuring snaps, synthesizers, and background vocals that sound like pan pipes -- standing out from the rest of the pack. ~ Andrew Leahey

Papercut Chronicles II CD (2011)
Oh Land albums Their first album back together since 2008's The Quilt, The Papercut Chronicles II finds Gym Class Heroes returning back to basics and embracing the more organic, band-oriented sound that has made them the voice of hip-hop for the Warped Tour set. While past albums saw the band slowly drifting toward a more traditional, sample-driven sound, this sequel album really feels like a successor to The Papercut Chronicles. In a way, it feels as if Gym Class Heroes have been reinvigorated by their time off while Travie McCoy pursued a solo career, and songs like "Lazarus, Ze Gitan" and "Solo Discotheque (Whiskey Bitness)" have them easily delivering more of the infectious and highly polished sound that has made the quartet the pop/rap/punk crossover triple threat that it's grown into over the years. Tracks like these, where the group combines the raw energy of a live band with the carefully cultivated polish of a successful pop band, are where the album really succeeds, showing that Gym Class Heroes haven't grown up so much as learned how to properly wield the experience they've gained as climbers of the Billboard charts. The end result of this is an album that'll come as a blast from the past for the band's fans and should easily get heads nodding with its affably introspective lyrics and huge choruses. ~ Gregory Heaney
