Massimo Barbiero discography "Minnie" startles from the outset with Claudio Lodati's electric guitar spouting forth a speedy and lengthy hard bop run. Rossella Cangini follows with vocalese stretched wickedly like soft taffy, and the full rhythm section, including bassist Federico Marchesano, follows suit. There are other stunning tracks, and if each one had the audacity and the temerity of "Minnie," this would be a compelling album. Unfortunately, not all the tracks reach similar heights and some are even tedious. The origins of the group's name are not clear; perhaps it refers to the use of silence as part of the overall sound or to subdued tones, each of which is found here. The drummer-leader works primarily as instigator and organizer. Lodati had a role in composing ten of the 12 pieces, and he exercises a critical position, too, as the primary soloist. Often, as on the ephemeral "Estate," he floats above the plush carpets laid down by bass and guitar, while on the forward-moving "Trottavi" he ignites with his rapid delivery. Cangini's vocals pump life into the numbers in which she participates; for example, she speaks nonsense and changes tempos on "Naioro," intertwining with Marchesano's strings and giving the tune a rhythmic kick. ~ Steven Loewy Personnel: Massimo Barbiero (drums, percussion); Rosella Congini (vocals); Claudio Lodati (guitar); Federico Marchesano ...

Massimo Barbiero music CDs This one has all the makings of a classic: a small, well-rehearsed group that has recorded together several times before; a "superstar" guest artist, saxophonist Tim Berne; one of Italy's leading jazz trumpet players, Alberto Mandarini; original compositions by group members; and classy packaging. Unfortunately, the CD disappoints somewhat. Although there is some good blowing -- notably by Berne and Mandarini -- there is a dullness throughout the arrangements that dampens the creativity. Perhaps it is the "seventies English rock" influence noted in the liners. The rhythm section of guitarist Maurizio Brunod, bassist Giovanni Maier, and drummer and de facto leader Massimo Barbiero perform professionally enough; but there is too much emphasis on static rhythmic lines, and not enough on creative discourse. Nonetheless, fans of Mandarini and, to some extent, Berne, should find something to crow about. It is interesting to see the saxophonist both as a sideman and in a more conventional setting than he is usually accustomed. ~ Steve Loewy Recording information: Teatro Giacosa Ivrea (03/11/1999). Personnel: Tim Berne (alto saxophone); Maurizio Brunod (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Alberto Mandarini (trumpet, flugelhorn); Giovanni Maier (double bass); Massimo Barbiero (drums, percussion). Liner Note Authors: Thomas Bernhard; Roberto Valentino.

Massimo Barbiero CD discography Italy's Enten Eller quartet is known for intertwining free jazz dialogue with hard boppish swing motifs and jazz-rock-style pyrotechnics amid late-'90s early-'00s collaborations with American saxophonist/modernist Tim Berne. Recorded live in Saint Vincent, Italy, this 1998 release features trumpeter Alberto Mandarini and electric guitarist Maurizio Brunod navigating the band through a series of feisty performances rooted upon abstract grooves, hard-edged swing, ostinato motifs, and electrified exchanges, along with a few memorably melodic themes tossed into the mix for good measure. Here, Enten Eller abides by an altogether fervent work ethic, as the band frequently goes for the jugular amid Brunod's Hendrix-like musings and Mandarini's bold, brassy tone and blazing 16th notes. Moreover, the musicians often generate climactically suspenseful opuses, awash with loads of impact and the ...
