Prophecy: Live in Europe Prophecy: Live in Europe CD (2013)
CD $15.99 Buy It  Details
Pain Killer music CDs On their previous releases, John Zorn's trio Pain Killer veered back and forth between grindcore-inspired mayhem (Mick Harris of Napalm Death was part of the original lineup), dub-wise explorations of musical space, and Zorn's trademark take on free jazz. The Prophecy: Live in Europe, an album compiled from live Pain Killer performances recorded in Europe during 2004 and 2005, sounds like an effort to bridge the gaps between the group's various obsessions; with Bill Laswell on electric bass and Tatsuya Yoshida on drums joining Zorn on sax, ...

Pain Killer discography Principally recorded at Greenpoint Studio, Brooklyn, New York and live in Osaka, Japan in November 1994. John Zorn teams up with Bill Laswell and Scorn's Mick Harris to form Painkiller, who take Naked City's jazz-thrash template as a launching point, and then leap into the outer reaches of dub and improvised free jazz. This set, as advertised, contains the early EPs, Guts of a Virgin and Buried Secrets, their sole full-length, the double-disc Execution Ground, and a live concert recorded in Osaka in 1994 and featuring Boredoms vocalist ...
Talisman: Live in Nagoya Talisman: Live in Nagoya CD (2002)
CD $16.49 Buy It  Details
Pain Killer songs Pain Killer started out in 1991 as an incredibly brutal and exhilarating avant-core trio. It gradually turned into a free-dub unit with much less ideas per minute. Talisman: Live in Nagoya belongs to the second end of the spectrum. Recorded on November 24, 1994, it stands definitely closer to Execution Ground than to Guts of a Virgin. The set begins with the 32-minute "Batrachophrenoboocosmomachia." It embodies everything annoying about the latter half of this group's lifetime. The dub tempo means that ideas are introduced at a slower ...
50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 12 50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 12 CD (2005)
CD $16.49 Buy It  Details
Pain Killer CD discography The "version" of Painkiller John Zorn assembled for this performance in his month-long 50th birthday celebration at Tonic included Bill Laswell from the original incarnation and drummer Hamid Drake as well as vocalist Mike Patton. While Patton is no Yamantaka Eye, Drake is far more compelling as a drummer than Mick Harris. The insert on the set correctly claims that this unit is something completely different. Not only does this band play a less free version of jazz, punk, and rock, it also plays free of many of the dub trappings it had engaged in an earlier incarnation. This ...
Buried Secrets Buried Secrets CD (1992)
CD Check Availability  Details
Pain Killer albums Buried Secrets features guest appearances by Godflesh's Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green on two tracks. Zorn is capable of making his saxophone really sound like the screams of a tortured victim, as on "Tortured Souls" and "Skinned." Although this is experimental music, it works quite well -- it's actually more sinister and menacing than many death metal groups. Very dark and very disturbing, 27 minutes is almost too much to handle. ~ Steve Huey
