Mixed Nuts CD
Skunks discography One of ska's best-kept secrets, the Skunks' Mixed Nuts offers 14 more reasons to hold on to that pork pie hat, that chain wallet, and those patches on your jacket. Most ska falls into sameness rather quickly, but Mixed Nuts proves the Skunks to be more than just a few high-school jazz band wiseguys dawdling around a chirpy upbeat. On Mixed Nuts, each song sounds refreshingly unlike the last. As the Frank Sinatra soundbite on "The Chairman" suggests, the Skunks are more big band than reggae, and they wear their influences well. While many ska bands backslide easily into their roots, the Skunks play at their own without becoming too derivative: "Glass Pants" breaks into L.A. punk guitar; "Janie" teases a few bars worth of surf; "Disköskätt" explores, well, German disco. The horn arrangements and solo tradeoffs on the swingy "Zamboni" are fun yet surprisingly well orchestrated. But Mixed Nuts' finest moments come during the rock-star-as-sleazeball-felon parody "Didn't Know," whose punchy brass, ballpark organs, and whodunit-type breakdown bring ska to new poppy, funny, but bittersweet levels. And, since no ska band would be complete without the requisite ironic throwback, Mixed Nuts meets its kitsch quota with covers of The Odd Couple theme and the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." But underneath the horns and hyperactivity, Mixed Nuts displays what many ska bands lack: basic pop sensibility. And that, above anything else, makes the Skunks one of the few essential yet unheard-of bands in their genre. ~ Bill Peters

No Apologies CD (1996)
Skunks songs Bands have the ability to liberate and exhilarate; they can also irritate, frustrate, and infuriate, but few groups can elicit every one of those emotions, the Skunks being one of those rare exceptions. The Washington, D.C., Skunks introduced themselves to the ska scene in 1994 with their debut album, Mixed Nuts. Their bellowing horns roaring out over upbeat danceable melodies, often beholden to 2-Tone, was a winning combination, and skankers around the country eagerly awaited a tour and a follow-up. Instead, to everyone's disappointment, the Skunks promptly broke up -- so much potential gone to waste. But sorrow turned to glee when the news leaked out a year ...

SKAndalous: I've Gotcha Covered Vol. 2 CD (1997)
Skunks CD discography Shanachie Records' Skandalous: I've Gotcha Covered, Vol. 2 follows the same formula as its predecessor, enlisting '90s ska revivalists to fuse skankin' rhythms with rock & roll tunes and television themes in a series of bizarre covers. This time around, the selections are even more varied, taking in Ritchie Valens' Latin rock classic "La Bamba" (rendered by Checkered Cabs), Stevie Wonder's funky "Higher Ground" (tackled by the Skandalous All-Stars), and a handful of new wave hits (the Vapors' "Turning Japanese," Joe Jackson's "Got the Time"). Ruder Than You delivers a confounding cover of the Beatles' "Taxman" that ends with a pileup of harmony vocals, rapping, and gruff, dancehall-style ...
