Three Peppers Discography of CDs

1937-1940 1937-1940 CD (1996) 3 stars
CD $25.49 Buy CD  Details
Three Peppers discography This CD from the European Classics label has the entire recorded legacy of the Three Peppers (other than obscure sets in 1947 and 1949), 24 selections in all from six recording sessions. Consisting of Oliver "Toy" Wilson on piano, guitarist Bob Bell and bassist Walter Williams, the Three Peppers (which had Wilson, Bell and maybe Williams indulging in group vocals) preceded the Nat King Cole Trio and played hot swing and novelties with plenty of spirit. This CD includes a previously unreleased recording of "The Sheik of Araby" and is highlighted by such tunes as "Swingin' at the Cotton Club," "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" (one of four numbers with singer Sally Gooding, trumpet, clarinet and drums added), two versions of "Swing Out, Uncle Wilson" and "Pepperism." Recommended for lovers of small-group swing. ~ Scott Yanow Liner Note Author: Anatol Schenker. Recording information: New York, NY (02/27/1937-05/??/1940). Unknown Contributor Roles: Walter Williams ; Bob Bell. The Three Peppers: Toy Wilson, Bob Bell, Walter Williams. Personnel: Bob Bell (vocals, guitar); Ollie Wilson (vocals, piano); Walter Williams (baritone saxophone).

Three Peppers CD discography The Human Orchestra, which featured 16 tracks by pre-rock & roll black vocal groups from the 1930s and 1940s, was originally released as an LP in 1985 by a Swedish label. This two-disc set takes the original 16-track archival collection and adds 34 additional tracks from the same era to come up with a fascinating survey of jump and jive black vocal acts, many of which were capable of approximating an orchestra with their voices. Among the gems here (all recorded between 1932 and 1947) are sides cut by the Mills Brothers, the Ink Spots, the Five Jones Boys, the Four Blackbirds, the Three Keys, and the Four Clefs , among many others, and these exciting and revealing performances clearly prefigure the later street-corner harmonies of the doo wop era. ~ Steve Leggett UK two CD ...
