"MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS" JADCD 1097
Works by: Eric Gross, Ann Carr-Boyd, Robert Allworth. Duration: 50'23"
Featured players in this engaging CD are Michael Hooper, mandolin; Esther Cheng, violin; Michael Tabrett, viola & Catherine Tabrett, 'cello. This group premieres new works by Gross & Allworth. Adding to Gross' already substantial contribution to mandolin repertoire is CONCERTO DA CAMERA (1997) in 4 movements. Reflecting, in its structure, the musical traditions of Vienna and, in particular, the work of 18th century Czech composer Dusek. Gross achieves a pleasing fusion of past and present. A work of distinctive modernity.
Also pleasing, and written for the same ensemble, are 3 new works by Allworth: MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS is autumnal in character, giving clear themes in 12-note formations and sequential forms. In MEDITATIONS prominence is given to the mandolin, while in FOREVER SUNSET, inspired by Tennyson's poem "The Lotus Eaters", the ensemble creates colouristic effects.

Cheng albums Over the centuries, the spirit of the dance has bonded music of all forms. Though infinitely varied, music that inspires the dance shares an intangible essence: part rhythm, part melody, it makes the body move. Pianist Gloria Cheng's tribute to 20th century dance taps into this powerful force, producing an album as ambitious and varied as it is successful.
