Keeper Keeper CD (2010)
CD $13.59 Buy It  Details
Stryker albums Through many years, guitarist Dave Artist and saxophonist Steve Slagle have strengthened a partnership based on opposite dialects. Artist's warm, effusive sound combined with the tart alto of Slagle is not a dish for everyone, but for them it works well. These original neo-bop tracks are steeped in swing and flavored by the slightly sharp tone of Slagle, quite reminiscent of Jackie McLean. At times spiked with angular or off-kilter harmonies à la Thelonious Monk, the title track and "Bailout" set a tone apart from the more fusion-oriented music these two have produced in the past. Artist's deep blue chords and lines still reflect his time with soul-jazz bands, while Slagle is reaching for that small degree of cutting-edge presence that marks his sound with distinction and a difference. ~ Michael G. Nastos THE Artist / SLAGLE BAND "KEEPER" After a successful two-night run at the Jazz Standard in NYC in January , The Artist / Slagle Band headed back up to bassist Jay Anderson's Mountain Rest Studio in New Paltz NY to lay down nine new original tracks as well as a cover of ...

Stryker CD discography The Artist/Slagle Band's third CD can be described as post-bop with an edge. Both Dave Artist (guitar) and Steve Slagle (alto sax, soprano sax, flute) have paid a lot of dues as sidemen and have recorded albums of their own. But sparks fly when the two men join forces, propelled by bassist Jay Anderson and drummer extraordinaire Victor Lewis. Tenor saxist Joe Lovano is an added guest on several numbers, including "Skee," Slagle's quirky tribute to the late Dennis Irwin, a highly sought-after bassist who lost his battle with cancer in early 2008, along with Slagle's loping, Monk-flavored "Hopewell's Last." Artist penned a few songs as well, including the upbeat vehicle "Brighter Day" (also adding...
Stryker-Slagle Band Stryker-Slagle Band CD (2003)
CD $14.59 Buy It  Details
Stryker music CDs Though they had been collaborating on each others' records since 1986, the self-titled release from the Artist-Slagle Band is the first true joint venture by guitarist Dave Artist and saxophonist Steve Slagle. The long lead-up to the debut proves worthwhile. The session features a well-developed band playing original music crafted to take advantage of the band's talents. The songs range from the Latin ballad "Tudo Muda" to the torrid bop streaker "Long Gone" (both by Slagle). Artist's "Nothin' Wrong With It" serves as a fitting opener. The melody has a folk-pop quality that seems to beg for lyrics. But the catchy tune belies the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication underneath. These complexities wrapped in melody launch...
Live at the Jazz Standard Live at the Jazz Standard CD (2005)

Stryker discography With a whole sheaf of new tunes to work over, guitarist Dave Artist and saxophonist Steve Slagle went into New York's ironically named Jazz Standard club for this one -- ironic in that there is barely one standard on the disc. The two have been playing together for nearly 20 years; their mutual telepathy is obvious in the tightly knit way they mix it up on the last solo chorus before the return of the theme in "Mozone" and after the trading of fours on "The Great Divide." Artist has B.B. King on the brain in a piece as good as its name, "Boogaloo 7" (in 7/4 time); indeed, he is at his most winning...
