Einstein's Sister Einstein's Sister CD (1999)
CD $11.65 Buy CD  Details
EINSTEIN'S SISTER albums 'EINSTEIN'S SISTER' began as a series of basement demos recorded in the fall of 1995. We began selling these "demo tapes" at our acoustic shows and eventually raised enough money to have the 8-track home recordings professionally mixed (or saved) by Tom Tatman at Catamount Recording in early 1996. We often refer to this CD as our "demo on steroids" or "the little demos that could." Not only did this CD bring us regional radio and television attention (big fish, little pond), it also gave us an excuse to start the band. Due to many requests, we re-released the album in the fall of 1999, complete with new packaging & artwork, a mastering upgrade, as well as several bonus tracks, including a Christmas single recorded after the album's original release. The debut album from Quad Cities' power popsters Einstein's Sister (originally released under the name Douglas and Tucker, the principal songwriting duo) is, as described by the band themselves, a "demo on steroids." Bill Douglas and Kerry Tucker were basically the whole band at this point, and while its clear that the blueprint for the Einstein's Sister releases to come was mostly in place, there are a few notable differences. The band's obvious musical touchpoints -- Elvis Costello, Squeeze, and XTC -- are all evident here, but there is significantly less focus. For example, "King in Name Alone" sounds just like Reckoning-era R.E.M., "Play God" and "My Own Country" are harder-rocking, Who-influenced numbers, and "Little Known Fact" pulls in the influences of oldies and blues. That's not necessarily bad, but it does show that the band hadn't quite yet found their voice. And then there's the "demo on steroids" part: the album ...

EINSTEIN'S SISTER music CDs Four albums in, and not much has changed in the world of Einstein's Sister. The guitars still jangle, the hooks are still bright and brassy, and the major musical references are taken from the textbooks of British pop. It must be rough being a pop band from Moline, IL, if only because a lot of good new music has a tough time making it down I-80 and into the middle of the country. Because of this, it's not surprising that with their fourth album, Humble Creatures, Einstein's Sister are still doing basically the same thing they've always done (albeit with some minor changes). What is surprising is that ...

EINSTEIN'S SISTER discography For all of the virtues of Einstein's Sister and Oceanus, they were solid albums for a local or regional act, but lacked a certain quality to endear Einstein's Sister to audiences outside the Midwest. Learning Curves changed all that. After the bungled release of Oceanus, in which the band had creative differences with their producer and would up losing a bassist, they took a D.I.Y. approach to Learning Curves, self-producing the album to make sure it came out right. It was also recorded with a stable lineup, and these changes made all the difference. Here, Einstein's Sister take the best of new wave-era British pop and update it ...
