Trichromes CD (2002)
Sy Klopps CD discography Robert Hunter, lyricist for the Grateful Dead, used to complain that the band made sparing use of his services in its latter days and then sometimes went years before it got around to recording songs of his it had been performing in concert. Since the band's demise, however, Hunter has gotten a lot more work as the individual members have turned to him for material. Hunter wrote the lyrics for eight of the 11 songs -- which is all but one of the songs that have lyrics -- on the debut album by the TriChromes, featuring former Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. Dice With The Universe CD (2002)
Sy Klopps albums For their first single release, the TriChromes tapped "Dice With the Universe," an original number co-written by bandmembers Neal Schon and Ira Walker with former Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The song itself -- as well as their live reading of the Dead's "New Speedway Boogie" -- is sluggishly unconvincing middle-aged rock. As soon as the band veers into improvisational territory, however, the music becomes far more interesting. Though Schon's guitar tone is pretty wimpy, and the band's rhythm section an approximation of funky, the music still manages to lightly swing, mostly thanks to former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kretuzmann. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Berkeley Soul CD (2000)
Sy Klopps music CDs Sy Klopps' Berkeley Soul starts off with a jumping blues ("Running Blue") before settling into a 1960s-type soul/R&B date that includes Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat," Sam Cooke's "You Gotta Move," and Little Willie John's "Walk Slow," along with some more exuberant tunes. Klopps has an appealing and versatile voice, equally skilled on the heated material and the rock & roll-ish ballads. Recommended to listeners who enjoy 1960s crooners. ~ Scott Yanow
