||Gilded Stars And Zealous Hearts CD (1996) |
Clif CD discography Velocity Girl continue to defy the hard-edged indie-rock tradition with their third album for the Sub Pop label. GILDED STARS is their most polished, infectious and melodic record yet, and it demonstrates the band's maturity and increased cohesiveness. Sarah Shannon's vocals are as sweet and plaintive as ever, by turns dreamily innocent and sharply focused; they are often paired with guitarist-bassist Archie Moore's freshly self-assured and adept voice. GILDED STARS has a newly mature feel, with heavier, rougher guitar work, quirkier tempos and sharper, more confident vocal hooks than the group's first two releases. A few tracks surprise and delight, such as the country-esque ballad "Same Old City," which juxtaposes a slide guitar with Shannon's smooth, pretty voice. Still evident are Velocity Girl's trademark jangly guitars and infectious choruses, and romantic lyrics so unabashed as to imbue GILDED STARS with a charm and vulnerability that is uncommon in alternative-pop music.
