I Unwrap You CD (1999)
Deborah Wai Kapohe songs Deborah Wai Kapohe is a New Zealand based Opera Singer , about todie on the stage of Hong Kong Opera as the leading lady in the tragic opera Pagliacci . But wait ! There is another side to this singer ...
Lurking underneath those opera wigs is an alternative folk/rock singer with a style influenced by Ani Difranco , Kate Bush and studying Ethnomusicology at University !
Please DON'T listen to Deborah Wai Kapohe if your CD collection contains only Top Ten albums ... ( but if it did you wouldn't be searching for something unique on CD Baby would you ? ).. Listen if you enjoy beautiful singing , highly trained guitar playing and musicianship .
Deborah loves to play the guitar sometimes beautifully and sometimes brutally by using plastic bags to distort it , playing it as a drum and searching for as many contrasting sounds as possible .
And her singing ? Deborah Wai Kapohe sings high and low and all around the place .
You name it .
If you enjoy " I unwrap you " then please look for Deborah's 3rd album " Elusive " which will be available on CD Baby in September . "Elusive" takes the acoustic sound of " I unwrap you " into an experimental but uniquely New Zealand sound with the use of traditional Maori Instruments , more experimental vocal sounds and the introduction of electronic instruments .
P.
S " I unwrap you " was recorded and mixed in 2 days in Wellington , New Zealand . The result is an album which records Deborah Wai Kapohe playing in a room as opposed to a manufactured and highly produced sound .

Michael and I really thought Elusive would never make it but the songs kept coming back, especially ...
