Old Stuff CD (2010)
New York Art Quartet music CDs In the mid-`60s golden age of free jazz, a group of sonic adventurers came together under the name of the New York Art Quartet, and though they didn't stick around long enough to burn their names into history to the same extent as peers like Ornette Coleman, or even the more "underground" stalwarts like Bill Dixon, the few artifacts they left behind are as bold and inspiring as nearly anything else from that era. Dixon, in fact, was the common connection for trombonist Roswell Rudd and alto sax man John Tchicai, who had both played with the trumpeter before forming the Art Quartet in 1964 with bassist Don Moore and drummer J.C. Moses. The rhythm section would go through a couple of changes during the group's brief lifespan, but Tchicai and Rudd were at the helm for both of the quartet's studio recordings. New York Art Quartet CD (1964)
New York Art Quartet discography Recorded November 26, 1964 in New York. Includes liner notes by Hans Schreiber, Tom "Tornado" Klatt, John Litweiler, Bernard Stollman.
Formed in 1964, the free-jazz ensemble New York Art Quartet comprises bassist Lewis Worrell, drummer Milford Graves, saxophonist John Tchicai, and trombonist Roswell Rudd. This self-titled disc was recorded in 1964, one of the first releases on the landmark ESP label, and was re-released on CD in 1993.
The NYAQ was one of the first groups to forge the collective avant improvisation that would typify 1970s collectives like the Chicago Art Ensemble. Their eponymous debut epitomizes the approach, offering up a clattering, keening sound that searches and seeks while evoking colors, shapes, and patterns in the listener's mind. A collaboration with poet Amiri Baraka on "Sweet--Black Dada Nihilismus" is an added bonus. An overlooked avant jazz gem, NEW YORK ART QUARTET is a must for fans of the genre.
