CD ReviewSlushco - Clouds EP Clouds, Atlanta quartet Slushco's sophomore EP, is 7 tracks of soft and dancy melodic rock that is sure to be embraced by indie rock geeks and drunk teenage emo chicks alike who love The Postal Service or Grandaddy. Lead singer/guitarist Brian Slusher is the group's key songwriter and composer. His sweet voice never raises to a yell, but the songs on this EP rise from space-y intros and chill beats to rockin' choruses, many wordless, using 'oohs,' 'ughs,' and 'bahs' to create universal sing-alongs. Despite soft and tender vocals, Slushco manages to stay far from the category of boring or sleepy that many mellow rock bands delve into. The album is out on Weatherproof Records, a homegrown company out of the loft of Slusher and bassist Tim Madison, and named after track 4 of the EP. Mikey Ogletree's synthesizer and multiple keyboards provide a playful and sometimes dream-like atmosphere that breaks this band out of any common compositional mold. Ogletree sings backing vocals, but often times lets the high pitch of the keys echo Slusher's words. Aaron Shively's drumming is heavier than you would expect out of a pop band, which is good because it packs a greater punch to each track. When combined with Madison's bass and sometimes synthesizer, a bouncy mood is created that will surely move some part of your body. This little EP is a promising look at the horizon that will soon be Slushco's debut full-length album.
