At the Apollo At the Apollo CD (1963) 4 stars
CD $14.59 Buy It  Details
Rudolph Johnson CD discography This live set by Hammond B-3 master Jimmy McGriff was released quite early in his career, but bears all the hallmarks of the organist's soul-jazz aesthetic. Saxophonist Rudoph Johnson, guitarist Larry Frazier, and drummer Willie Jenkins lend taut support to McGriff's swirling chords and bluesy solos, but are not above stepping into the spotlight now and then (Johnson, in particular, has some shining moments). Of course, the real star of the show is McGriff, whose Hammond lines come across as smooth as butter and as thick as syrup. A sprightly take on the standard "There'll Never Be Another You" opens the album, offset by the mood-shifting "We Four," and two McGriff originals that cook with cool, bluesy ferocity. McGriff plays closer to blues roots than most of his soul-jazz brethren, and the lack of overt jazz flavors brings the whole show even further down-home, making AT THE APOLLO accessible, straightforward, and fun. Includes liner notes by Les Fleischer. Personnel: Jimmy McGriff (organ); Larry Frazier (guitar); Rudolph Johnson (tenor saxophone). Recording information: Apollo Theatre, New York, NY (1963).
Easier Said Than Done/A Walkin' Miracle Easier Said Than Done/A Walkin' Miracle CD (1999) 3 stars

Rudolph Johnson albums The Essex's lead singer Anita Humes sounded and looked like Florence Ballad (Supremes). She must have been a huge fan of early Motown, because many of these selections mimic the sound. Humes and the rest of the group -- Walter Vickers, Rodney Taylor, Rudy Johnson, and Billie Hill -- were active Marine Corps members when the bubblegum-ish "Easier Said Than Done" zoomed to Number 1 on July 6, 1963. Collectables combined their two most successful albums on this CD. Walkin' Miracle, which was similar to Easier . . . shot to Number 12, their only other chart record was "She's Got Everything" (included), but don't let that put you off. Their two big hits were aberrations, they had a much more soulful persona as they prove on "I Love Her," and "Every Night," which sounds like Smokey Robinson's productions ...
Christmas with Jimmy McGriff Christmas with Jimmy McGriff CD (1996) 3.7 stars
CD Check Availability  Details
This funky little holiday gem from 1964 was originally released on Sue Records and was actually Jimmy McGriff's highest charting album, rising to number 15 on the pop charts that year. Naturally his gritty Hammond B-3 playing is front and center here, given wonderful support by drummer Jimmie Smith, guitarist Larry Frazier, and Rudolph Johnson on soprano and tenor saxophone. The whole affair is surprisingly energetic and spunky, and tracks like the hard-charging "Christmas With McGriff," the ...
