Schramms Discography of CDs

100 Questions 100 Questions CDs (2000)
CD $17.65 Buy CD  Details
Schramms music CDs The Schramms are named for their founder, guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave Schramm, who was a member of Yo La Tengo and played with Chris Stamey, Kate Jacobs, Soul Asylum and Freedy Johnston. Their fifth album, ONE HUNDRED QUESTIONS maintains the high standard of their previous efforts: heartfelt, earthy roots-rock that keeps an introspective, personal focus while avoiding painful earnestness or blandness. "Mary Come Lately," and the spooky ruminative ballad "I'll Believe," have a homey, loping sound that wouldn't be out place on early albums by the Band or Neil Young, yet there's also subtle use of distortion and noise that recalls Sonic Youth (in their quieter moments) and DJ Spooky. "Torn In Two" ...
Walk to Delphi Walk to Delphi CD (1990)
CD $15.39 Buy CD  Details
Schramms discography The Schramms are fronted by guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave Schramm. As a guitarist, Schramm played with Yo La Tengo for a period of time (and returned for the group's stellar FAKEBOOK album), and worked on numerous other projects as a session player. This 1990 debut is a casual set of strong songs and that are marked by supple playing. The instrumental configuration of guitar, bass, drums, and organ has shadings of Bob Dylan to it, but Schramm's writing is something uniquely his own. The songs are steeped in a sort of world weary optimism and touch on community concerns, love, loss, and longing. His rough-hewn singing is unapologetically natural and full of ...
Dizzy Spell Dizzy Spell CD (1998)
CD $15.39 Buy CD  Details
Schramms songs After a four-year silence, the Schramms followed up their superb LITTLE APOCALYPSE with the equally fine DIZZY SPELL. The members of this excellent combo have the smarts and chops to sympathetically, energetically, and appropriately wrap themselves around the songs of leader Dave Schramm. His writing has the lyric sophistication and the bleak yet hopeful bearing of a songsmith like Richard Thompson. Schramm also knows the traditions he draws from well enough to create songs that are quite timeless. The set's one cover is "In Hell's Despite," by Peter Blegvad (whom Schramm has accompanied) and Andy Partridge. Throughout, the band judiciously mixes acoustic with electric instruments with riveting results. Broad and ...
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Dynamite Rock, Paper, Scissors, Dynamite CD (1992)
CD $15.39 Buy CD  Details
Schramms CD discography This is the second album by the Schramms, a work that was again produced by the group as a whole. While the band is fronted by guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave Schramm, the group's ensemble interplay is a defining characteristic of its sound. The keyboard playing of Terry Karydes in particular adds both sonic depth and dazzling highlights. Schramm's songs are a solid and heartfelt lot, and this time out the band sounds even richer and more confident than it did on its solid debut, WALK TO DELPHI. Bands like the Wallflowers took a similar sound to the top of the charts, while the Schramms have gone largely unnoticed. However, music this good is timeless and always worthy of deserving listeners. Anyone unfamiliar with this band can confidently start with this title or its successors, LITTLE APOCALYPSE and DIZZY SPELL. Shaped from former members of Yo La Tengo, The Human Switchboard and Peter Stanfel's Bottlecaps, The Schramms have been a Hoboken and New York fixture since 1985. Finding a place in the sun both in the U.S. and in Europe, they have become one of rock's most respected and talented bands. Dave Schramm has been a featured guitarist on current works by Richard Buckner, Freedy Johnston, Soul Asylum, The Replacements and Whiskeytown. The Schramms ...
