Sound Mirrors CDs (2006)
Mpho Skeef albums DJs Matt Black and Jonathan More have garnered as much acclaim for their production and remix work under the name Coldcut as they have for the albums they've released on their groundbreaking Ninja Tune label. Such a resume makes Coldcut one of the prime movers in electronica, and 2006's varied, absorbing SOUND MIRRORS indicates nothing less.
As per usual, Black and More lay down ambient textures, shuffling breakbeats, and elements that pull from dub, acid house, hip-hop, and everything in between. But what distinguishes SOUND MIRRORS from most electronica outings is the appearance of vocalists on nearly every track. The guests include John Matthias, Roots Manuva, Jon Spencer, and Amiri Baraka, among others, giving the effort an accessible, song-oriented pop edge that balances out its heady electronic pedigree.
First 10,000 CDs in limited edition packaging.
Coldcut: Matt Black, Jonathan Moore.
Additional personnel: Annette Peacock, Roots Manuva, Saul Williams, Robert Owens .

Mpho Skeef CD discography The Detroit musician Joseph Anthony displays his total recall of the prevailing R&B trends of the 50 years preceding his second album with a collection of songs that recall variously 1930s jazz, soul jazz, New Jack Swing, '70s funk, and Marvin Gaye. But he's at his best on cuts like "Ridin'," which blends his classic falsetto with a vintage rhythm track in a kind of updated Isley Brothers dance track, and the bleak-but-perfect, synthesizer-layered "Find My Way," which packs a whole movie's worth of overlapping story lines into a few succinct verses.
Personnel: Amp Fiddler (vocals, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Corinne Bailey Rae, Ebony "Nico" Washington (vocals); Chris Bruce, Chaz Jankel, Keziah Jones, ...

Vintage Hi-Tech CD (2003)
Mpho Skeef music CDs Whether heard as a jarring abandonment of the contemporary R&B rulebook or a blanching of the form's all-too-necessary characteristics, Spacek continues down its own little path for better or worse on its second album in three years. Vintage Hi-Tech isn't much of a change from Curvatia. Steve Spacek's voice barely raises above living-room chit-chat volume and drifts atop splintered, discombobulated grooves; flicks of ...
