Saheb Sarbib albums Although Saheb Sarbib switches between bass and piano and contributed all but one of the eight selections heard on this disc (every piece but Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip"), this live set is most notable for the saxophone solos of Mel Ellison (on alto, soprano and tenor) and altoist Mark Whitecage. With the support of drummer Paul Motian, Sarbib lays down a solid foundation for the adventurous horns. The music is quite coherent but often free, making for a stimulating listen. ~ Scott Yanow Saheb Sarbib Quartet: Saheb Sarbib (bass, piano), Mel Ellison (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones), Mark Whitecage (alto saxophone), Paul Motian (drums). Personnel: Saheb Sarbib (piano); Mel Ellison (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Mark Whitecage (alto saxophone); Paul Motian (drums). Audio Remixer: Richard Brownstein. Liner Note Author: Michael Shore. Recording information: New York University Auditorium, NY (11/05/1981). Photographer: Spencer Richards.

Archie Shepp was the picture of rebellion and anger in the 1960s, but he became the voice of swing, blues and classicism in the 1980s. Shepp displayed his penchant for honking R&B and soulful blues on this 1984 date. The title piece was a jaunty stroll, as was the celebratory "Straight Street." Shepp turned to impressionistic fare with his version of Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight." The group included a great drummer in Marvin Smith and also other competent players, although Saheb Sarbib sometimes did not offer as full and aggressive a backbeat as needed. But Shepp's swaggering, confident tone and style maintained the pace. ~ Ron Wynn Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Recording information: Classic Sound Productions Studio, New York, NY (02/05/1984-02/08/1984). Photographer: Carol Friedman. Personnel includes: Archie Shepp (tenor & soprano saxophones).
