Relentless CD (1985) Top Seller
Victor Griffin music CDs Relentless is a well-chosen name for Pentagram's belated first album, as it was only through relentless determination that vocalist Bobby Liebling -- a fixture of D.C.'s club scene since the early '70s -- managed to persist long enough to see its 1985 release. And though it is hampered by the usual sonic limitations you'd expect from an independent recording, from a musical standpoint, the album more than lives up to pent-up expectations. A raw, untainted slab of pure doom metal, Relentless is a time tunnel straight to heavy metal's very inception at the hands of Black Sabbath -- largely thanks to its lo-fi recording, ironically. Guitarist Victor Griffin is an obvious disciple of Tony Iommi's fretwork, and the eerie similarity between Liebling's and Ozzy's vocal styles simply must to be heard to be believed. Together, they lead the band through grim anthems of depression and social ostracism, including the excellent "Dying World," "Sign of the Wolf (Pentagram)," "You're Lost, I'm Free," and "Sinister" (whose leaden backbeat is punctuated by what sounds like iron stakes being driven through a vampire's heart). Hardly a masterpiece, but well worth the wait, Relentless instantly confirmed Pentagram's position alongside Saint Vitus and Trouble in the American doom metal elite. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Turn to Stone CD (2002)
Victor Griffin CD discography Even though Pentagram released no new albums in 2002, the year turned out to be big for the doom metal godfathers. First came the grail-like First Daze Here compilation of their hard to find '70s material (issued on Relapse), followed months later by this collection of songs from the band's '80s and '90s Peaceville releases. Of the two, this one is far less earth-shattering, as this material has already been widely available, but for listeners who are ...

Black Is Never Far CD (2005)
Victor Griffin albums For a while there, it didn't look like Place of Skulls would ever release a third album, having announced their breakup following an exciting but not surprisingly doomed-to-be-brief ("doom," get it?) association with journeyman Scott "Wino" Weinrich (Saint Vitus, the Obsessed, Spirit ...

Last Rites CD (2011)
Victor Griffin discography The release of Pentagram's latest album, 2011's ominously titled Last Rites, via Metal Blade, is emblematic of the Virginia doom icons' painfully slow rise out of obscurity, as this is undoubtedly the most powerful record company association of the band's ill-starred 40-year career. Heck, at this rate, Pentagram leader Bobby Liebling will be signing on the dotted line with Columbia Records by the time he turns 100! Well, maybe not, but bet against the old ghoul at your peril. And seriously, aside from being the first Pentagram studio album released since 2004's disappointing Show `Em How, Last ...
