Viewfinder CD (2001)
Curtis Harvey songs Making their debut with 1998's Turnstyles & Junkpiles, a collection of instrumental acoustic tapestries cut live to two-track tape, Pullman initially seemed like a one-off proposition. It would be nearly four years before the quartet of multi-instrumentalists -- Ken "Bundy K." Brown, Doug McCombs, Curtis Harvey, and ...

C CD (1996)
Curtis Harvey music CDs Brooklyn's Rex made an incredible leap forward from its lackluster first album to C, its second and best. Stretching out over 70 minutes, the album is a lush, almost lethargic showcase for singer/guitarist Curtis Harvey's sad songs. Front-loaded with the band's best songs (the stunning "Morning and ...

3 CD (1997)
Curtis Harvey songs Once again, Rex continue to refine their gentle, meandering brand of emo-core indie rock. Like an Afghan Whigs on Prozac, Rex's third full length features an increased attention on the violins, mandolins and cellos that subtly accompany the quiet, drifting guitars and bass. Although maybe just another ...

Egg CD (1996)
Curtis Harvey music CDs Led by percussionist and genre-smasher Doug Sharin, HiM is part of Chicago's post-rock scene and one of several bands to blend jazz, electronica, post-punk, world flavors, and the ideas of 20th century minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. HiM also throws in a healthy dose of ...

No. 5ive Longplayer CD (2000)
Curtis Harvey CD discography The first track, "Alushta," shifts back and forth between 7/4 and 12/4 time. That tells you something right off: these guys are smart and they practice a lot. And there are no vocals on the album, which also tells you something: they probably have day jobs. The ...

Turnstyles and Junkpiles CD (1998)
Curtis Harvey discography A relentless lullaby of acoustic guitar music from the "Chicago-mafia," featuring members of Tortoise, Rex, Directions In Music and Come. This is a surprisingly accessible offering from the venerable Thrill Jockey label, yet it in no way diminishes that label's status as a class act. Acoustic guitars, ...

Waltz CD (1996)
Curtis Harvey albums All of the tunes created by Harvey, Spirito, and Scharin of Rex on Waltz are in the style of, you guessed it, a waltz in 3/4 time. A country flavor exists on this record, along with added textures of strings and horns, which are a wonderful element ...

No. 5iven Longplayer Vinyl LP (2000)
Curtis Harvey discography The first track, "Alushta," shifts back and forth between 7/4 and 12/4 time. That tells you something right off: these guys are smart and they practice a lot. And there are no vocals on the album, which also tells you something: they probably have day jobs. The first full-length from this quartet (their four-song EP reportedly charted fairly well with CMJ in 1997) is an awfully pretty affair, with lots of shimmery guitar counterpoint, weird time signatures, melodies that are attractive without ever really being hummable, and interesting textural choices that include pedal steel licks, cello, Byrds-y 12-string, and trumpet. This is one of those bands that people consider themselves clever for liking, but that's no reason not to like the Letter E yourself. "Better Days" is one of the loveliest pieces of instrumental rock ever ...
