Catbird Seat Catbird Seat CD (2002) 5 stars
CD $12.49 Buy It  Details
Dwike Mitchell CD discography The Catbird Seat is a rare session from the short-lived trio of pianist Dwike Mitchell, bassist Willie Ruff, and drummer Charlie Smith. Originally released in 1961 on Atlantic Records, these are straight-ahead jazz interpretations of "So in Love," "Con Alma," "I'll Remember April," "Street of Dreams," "Gypsy in My Soul," and the Mitchell original "The Catbird Seat." Since this version of the trio only recorded one date for Atlantic (the other, After This Message, featured Helcio Milito on drums), collectors will be glad to find this back in print on Collectables. ~ Al Campbell Recorded live at The Playback Club, New Haven, Connecticut. Originally released on Atlantic (1374). Personnel: Dwike Mitchell (piano); Charlie Smith (drums). Liner Note Author: ...

Dwike Mitchell music CDs Because so few of the recordings by the Mitchell-Ruff Duo have been reissued during the CD era, the reappearance of their recordings on various Collectables releases has been very welcome. Two separate LPs, recorded nearly a decade apart for Epic, make up this two-CD compilation. Brazilian Trip, though recorded in New York City in the summer of 1966, finds the American duo working with a rotating cast of young Brazilian ...

Dwike Mitchell songs The Mitchell-Ruff Trio includes: Dwike Mitchell, Willie Ruff. A reissue of two separate Atlantic recordings on one CD, the first is early period Les McCann in a half-and-half mix of straight soul-jazz tracks rivaling Ramsey Lewis, alternating with string and vocal infused ballads. The Dwike Mitchell-Willie Ruff trio sides (sans Ruff's French Horn) are all straight piano-bass-drums, mostly lighter cocktail-like fare, a bit of bop, and low-key ballads. They provide a ...

CD Check Availability  Details
Dwike Mitchell albums Lionel Hampton was touring constantly during the 1950s and this second volume of a Vienna concert broadcast represents a typical night's performance, recorded at the beginning of a tour of Austria. Hampton is the star soloist for the most part, though pianist Dwike Mitchell has a few features and the band includes Nat Adderley and Wallace Davenport in the trumpet section. The vocal features for Sonny Parker border on rock ...
Dizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell-Ruff Duo Dizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell-Ruff Duo CD (1991)
CD Check Availability  Details
Dwike Mitchell music CDs This live CD combines excerpts from two separate concerts by the Mitchell-Ruff Duo. The earlier program adds trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie to the mix, which is a nice change of pace from the sets typically featuring this bop giant. Dwike Mitchell's conservative piano and Willie Ruff's tasty bass licks inspire Gillespie in the moving opener, "Con Alma." Ruff switches to French horn, joined by Gillespie, for the likely improvised "Dartmouth Duet." ...
