Stag CD (2001)
Kaia Wilson albums As one half of the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray helped make the '80s and '90s safe for smart, modern folk-rock. On her solo debut, Ray takes a step to the left of the mainstream, adopting a sound much rougher than that of the Indigo Girls and working with underground rockers like producer/engineer Chris Stamey and the Rock*A*Teens.
Things start out in appropriately gritty fashion, with an energetic punk bluegrass ode to Johnny Rotten. Along the way, Ray touches on everything from the Neil Young/Crazy Horse-like guitar rock of "Laramie" to the frantic lo-fi raving of "Mountains of Glory" and the low-key acoustic balladry of "Lazyboy." Those who come to STAG expecting an Indigo Girls redux will ...

Didn't It Feel Kinder CD (2008)
Kaia Wilson music CDs Like her three previous solo albums, Amy Ray's DIDN'T IT FEEL KINDER is quite different from the placid folk-rock of her higher profile work as half of the duo Indigo Girls, but it also shows a creative leap from her earlier solo work. A brash, electric album ...

Make Yr Life CD (2004)
Kaia Wilson discography The Butchies -- featuring former Team Dresch-er Kaia Wilson -- deliver a palatable, airwave-deserving take on punk rock with Make Yr Life. Unfortunately, because of the homophobic state of commercial radio, you're not likely to hear passionate, sugary blasts like "Second Guess" or the sexually charged "Send Me You" rocking from the higher reaches of the FM dial. Still, the group's fourth album is notably strong, proving once and for all ...

Are We Not Femme? CD (1998)
Kaia Wilson songs The Butchies' debut is a mix 'n' match collection of genres, from classic rock- and riot grrrl-influenced punk to folk- and disco-driven dance beats. The results should probably end up a disastrous mishmash of clashing and crashing sounds, but the trio's Are We Not Femme? is a glorious debut as Kaia Wilson (ex-Team Dresch), Melissa York, and Alison Martlew stomp and stamp through various song styles like the pros they are. ...

No Light In August CD (2000)
Kaia Wilson CD discography Influenced musically by Kaia Wilson (Team Dresch, the Butchies) and Kurt Cobain, among others, South Carolina's Tami Hart was just a teenager when she released her debut on Wilson's label, the pro-queer and feminist imprint Mr. Lady. No Light in August is a startling debut, too, with Hart sounding like she has an infinitely older soul than is healthy for any 19 year old. On songs like the opening "Drunken Love ...

Population 1975 CD (1999)
Kaia Wilson albums Population 1975, the Butchies' second album, continues the string of musically and emotionally rewarding projects involving singer/guitarist/songwriter Kaia Wilson (who, of course, first made her name with queercore godmothers Team Dresch, as did drummer Melissa York). The album isn't so much a vast improvement on Are We Not Femme? -- a fine record as it was -- as a consolidation of its strengths. The songs are, as always, firmly rooted in ...
