Conor Oberst Biography
After putting out several cassettes under his own name in the mid '90s, Artist broke through as the main creative engine for Bright Eyes, his band with Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott. Often referred to as a Gen-Y Dylan and dubbed by Rolling Stone a "boy genius" for his songwriting vision, Oberst dazzled and repelled in almost equal numbers and energy with his gymnastic wordplay, emo-inflected vocal style, and indie-rock celebrity. Throughout the '00s, his workload included a string of releases with a maturing, indelible song catalog, near endless touring, and co-ownership of the Team Love label. In 2008, Oberst scaled back. Writing and performing under his birth name for the first time in over a decade, he and a few friends dubbed the Mystic Valley Band recorded an album both subdued and raw (by Bright Eyes standards) for Merge Records fittingly called Artist.
