Songs for the Wrong Songs for the Wrong CD (2003) 3.5 stars
CD $7.59 Buy It  Details
Mike Derks music CDs Whoever determined that heavy metal and humor simply don't mix (was it Spinal Tap?) failed to alert vocalist/bassist Dave Brockie (of GWAR infamy) and his ill-intentioned cohorts (guitarist Mike Derks and drummer Brad Roberts) in the ironically named Dave Brockie Experience. Together they pack 2003's alternately gut-busting and distraction-inducing Songs for the Wrong with 17 songs dedicated to everything from animal instincts ("I Wanna Be a Squirrell" and the Zappa-esque "Medieval Werewolf") to scatological musings ("Slowpoke," "Hard for a 'Tard"), to promoting homosexual affirmative action in the military ("March of the Faggot Soldiers")...OK, not really. Equally prone to eulogizing cheese ("The Chinese Have No Cheese") and his penis ("Should the Ugly Girl Blow Me?"), Brockie and his crew are clearly not everyone's cup of tea, but if approached with an open mind and a teenage maturity level, Songs for the Wrong guarantees a good time, if not necessarily great music. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia (Dx3). Mike Derks albums The mighty Gwar returns in 2001 with their eighth sonic sex-and-splatter-fest, The Violence Has Arrived. Although Gwar's albums have always served mainly as soundtracks to their comic performance-art concerts, the band does actually take their music seriously enough to make well-executed records. The Violence Has Arrived predictably doesn't reveal any new shades or dimensions to Gwar, but dependably continues the band's tradition of self-parodic, '80s-style heavy metal, lyrically wallowing in ridiculously over-the-top gore, sexual perversions, and other tastelessness. Sample lyric: "Your beauty makes me sick/I'd rather f*ck a troll/Kick you in the head/Vomit in the hole." Needless to say, not for the squeamish. ~ Andy Hinds Personnel: Dave Brockie (vocals); Mike Derks, Zach Blair (guitar); Brad Roberts (drums). Recording information: Slave Pit Studios, Antarctica (2001).
