Death of the Sun CD (2007)
Butchy Fuego discography The line between acid folk and intelligent ambient new age was rarely explored before the 21st century. But by the time of Matteah Baim's solo album in 2007, it was almost in vogue among certain alternative music circles, if hardly a commercial trend. Death of the Sun is a sort of mix of spaced-out folk music with, well, just plain spaciness. The main constants are Baim's plaintive vocals and a temperature that never rises above placid, though the mood is isolated and slightly overcast rather than mellow and peaceful. If her aim was to make music complementing the solitary, dusky, clouded imagery of the cover photography, she succeeded, the songs backing her measured, wispy singing with low-key sonic rumbles suggesting a thunderstorm on the way. Laughing Boy CD (2009)
Butchy Fuego albums Like Matteah Baim's debut album, Death of the Sun, its successor, Laughing Boy, has somewhat eerie and folky songs suggesting subdued mystical states of mind, vocalized with the appropriate enigmatic serenity. This time around, it may be that the arrangements are a little more earthbound, though the instrumentation is still far more imaginative than it is on many of the records of the era ...

Emergency CD (2004)
Butchy Fuego albums This rollicking three-piece melds the post-rock strategies of their hometown Chicago with charming female vocals not unlike a ballady Cat Power or later Blonde Redhead. Formerly known as Blackbirds, the band re-released Emergency under the moniker Pit Er Pat due to the overabundance of this type of musical animal. The album starts off with the epic three-part narrative of "Bog Man," and Fay Davis-Jeffers' ...
