Pilgrimage Pilgrimage CD (2007)
CD $11.05 Buy It  Details
Chris Hakius songs Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius of Om continue to explore the intersection of sludgy metal riffage and more meditative drones on their 2007 album, PILGRIMAGE. Over the course of four doom-laden tracks, Om search for that precise place where heavy music emerges as a vehicle for a deeper state of consciousness. That said, Cisneros and Hakius are certainly in no hurry to reach their spiritual destination, as evidenced by the slowly unfurling, moody wanderings of the album's opener. And even when the duo does open up and start to bash a bit further down the road ("Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead," "Bhima's Theme"), the moments play as stopovers on what is ultimately a longer journey into oblivion. When the album quietly returns full circle to where in began, the sense of completion is truly transcendent. Recording information: Electrical Audio, Chicago, IL (06/2007). Om: Al Cisneros, Chris Hakius. Personnel: Al Cisneros (vocals); Chris Hakius (drums). ...

Chris Hakius albums Seven years after Sleep's demise, Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius return in a pared-down bass-drums-vocals configuration. Although jettisoning guitars might be deemed sacrilegious by metal purists, Om doesn't sacrifice any of Sleep's lumbering, Sabbath-weight riffage as Cisneros's distorted, fuzzed-out bass does the job admirably. The name Om corresponds perfectly with the pair's mantric, minimalist style. Sleep buried listeners under tons of sonic magma, the ideal soundtrack to stoned, navel-gazing stupor; by contrast, Om's hypnotic groove aspires to a higher state, ...

Recording information: Klang Sound, San Francisco, CA (04/29/1990). Personnel: Tom Choi (vocals, guitar); Al Cisneros (vocals); Matt Pike (guitar); Chris Hakius (drums). Audio Mixers: Radley Hirsch; Mark Brooks.
Beauty for Ashes Beauty for Ashes CD (2002)
CD Check Availability  Details
Chris Hakius music CDs This eagerly awaited (at least in underground rock circles) debut marks the return of drummer Chris Hakius and guitarist/vocalist Justin Marler of doom metal legends Sleep fame. But fans expecting a Sleep-like barrage of unholy grinds and mind-numbing doom metal should look elsewhere (possibly to the also Sleep-derived High on Fire), since the Sabians' Beauty for Ashes is an entirely different animal. Indeed, despite being produced by another sludge metal legend in former Fudge Tunnel leader Alex Newport, the album is a highly melodic affair, presenting atmospheric hard rock alternating tasteful harmonics with brooding soft/hard dynamics. The opener, "Via Dolorosa," weaves sheets ...
