Ronnie Matthews CD discography This CD features percussionist Ray Mantilla's the Jazz Tribe, a sextet with altoist Bobby Watson, trumpeter Jack Walrath, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Victor Lewis. Mantilla's percussion infuses the largely straight-ahead music (three originals by Mantilla, two by Watson, and one apiece from the other four players, plus Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait") with Latin rhythms. The music swings and Watson in particular is in exciting form for the advanced hard bop outing. ~ Scott Yanow The Well-know super Group By Bobby Watson And ray mantilla Feat Steve Grossman, Walter Bishop Jr, Joe Cjhambers, Charles Fambrouugh. Ronnie Matthews albums This is a much more traditional jazz effort than Gordon's previous album, Currents. Featuring the leader on alto, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Mike LeDonne on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums, the record includes Gordon's compositions "Minor Dues" and "Stapleton," a bright waltz arrangement of "Isn't It Romantic," and a swinging version of the Milt Jackson blues "SKJ." Pianist Ronnie Mathews makes superb guest appearances on a pair of Monk tunes, "Monk's Dream" and "Ugly Beauty." The one very non-traditional element is the children's choir heard on "Without a Song," and Barry Harris's wholesome sermonette "These Are the Things We Need." Drummer Eddie Locke, who plays on these two tracks and ...

Ronnie Matthews music CDs At Sterling Place and Flatbush in Brooklyn, NY, the seeds for this quartet of jazz experts were planted, and the rich, ripe fruit grown to make up this CD. Alto and soprano saxophonist Vincent Herring, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Richie Goods, and drummer Carl Allen are the all-stars, and they collectively romp through seven numbers ranging from modal and swinging mainstream to bop, and a ballad, all played precisely, tastefully, and rhythmically spirited as you'd expect. Herring continues his predilection toward bop with ...

Ronnie Matthews discography Veteran alto saxophonist James Spaulding's fourth Muse release is a celebration of the musical form known as the blues, as he and tenor saxophonist Dan Faulk, pianist Ronnie Matthews, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Louis Hayes perform ten jazz classics. Spaulding divides his playing equally between alto sax and flute, but it is his spirited alto sax that is always distinctive, while Hayes' driving cymbal beat and snare drum accents are always a joy to hear. Favorites include Hank Mobley's "Hipsippy Blues" and ...
