Djikorya Mory Kante albums Malian guitarist and vocalist Abdoulaye Diabate has been blurring the boundaries between traditional African music and Western-influenced pop since he joined the Orchestre Regionale de Segou in the mid-'70s. On TONIGHT"S AFRICAN JAZZ BAND, Diabate is backed by Source, an improvisational ensemble organized by Canadian flautist Sylvain Leroux. The group performs a pleasing approximation of Malian Afro-pop, but the real attraction here is Diabate's effortlessly fluid guitar work, which dominates throughout.
