Oranges & Pineapples CD (2003)
Verna Brock songs Oranges & Pineapples finds the California Oranges experimenting with punk edges and less concerned with the band's classic twee pop. John Conley and company aren't as focused on making the most adorable sound, hence their summery name, and the crunchy licks layered throughout their second album outshine the charming bits found on their previous debut. Conley and bass player Verna Brock trade vocal duties, and brothers Ross and Matt Levine provide a tight rhythm section. The overall instrumentation on Oranges & Pineapples is slickly arranged, nothing short of what twee pop is all about, but the California Oranges make it better without being so sweet. Sure, the sugary moments are there on "Circle Line" and "So Many Days" and that's certainly OK. It's the merry rock & roll sounds of "Never Do That Again" and "Spacesuit" that truly make Oranges & Pineapples more delectable. Indie pop can be exciting and the California Oranges have found a powerful formula, sans ear-to-ear grins and handclasps. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

I Hope CD (2001)
Verna Brock CD discography I Hope is Holiday Flyer's fourth record, but it is the first recording with a fully realized band. Founding siblings Katie and John Conley have teamed up with longtime friends Verna Brock (California Oranges), drummer Jim Rivas (Rocketship), and bassist Mike Yoas to deliver a more unified sounding recording. I Hope is filled with bright, infectious pop songs, reminiscent of the Sundays and Mazzy Star. Katie Conley's voice has much in common with the delicate sounds of Hope Sandoval but, in the hands of ...

Godmoney CD (1997)
Verna Brock albums You know a lot has changed when movie soundtracks are filled with contemporary punk rock. And though the genre is not what it once was, this 22-songer is one of the better compilations of what it still is, since it insists on the more prominent groups who can play and write, such as Down by Law, Pennywise, Guttermouth, Rollins Band, Ten Foot Pole, AFI, Voodoo Glow Skulls (good variety), and the real punk-pop comer, MXPX. Best of all, there's a terrific Descendents track, "Lucky," ...
