Steve Benbow albums Originally released as BOLD SPORTSMEN ALL on Topic Records in 1958 and An album compiled from three different sources (a 10" LP, an EP, and three songs about highwaymen), with the selections split fairly evenly between MacColl and Lloyd, with one entry from Roy Harris ("The Saucy Bold Robber," following the version set down by Lloyd). The songs touch on gambling, horse racing, soccer (with old favorite "Football Crazy" here in a variant, "Gaelic Football"), highway robbery, boxing, and pool -- though the last is celebrated in "The Govan Pool-Hall Song," which is as much about the rampant thuggery once practiced in the Govan district of Glasgow. A fairly entertaining collection, though more minor in interest than many Topic releases -- there is still enough of interest to make it worth picking up. ~ Steven McDonald These songs of sport and betting evoke a packed landscape of hunts and racecourses, boxing rings and football pitches, cockfighting pits, card tables and poolrooms, in boisterous renditions by Ewan MacColl, A.L.Lloyd and Roy Harris. GAMBLERS ET SPORTING BLADES (EP) on Topic Records in 1962. Full performer name: Ewan MacColl/A.L. Lloyd/Roy Harris. Personnel: Ewan MacColl, A.L. Lloyd, Roy Harris (vocals); Steve Benbow, Peggy Seeger, Martin Carthy (guitar); Dave Swarbrick, Bobby Campbell (fiddle); John Cole (harmonica); Alf Edwards (concertina). Personnel: Martin Carthy, Peggy Seeger, Steve Benbow (guitar); Dave Swarbrick, Bob Campbell (fiddle); John Cole (harmonica); Alf Edwards (concertina).

Steve Benbow CD discography A phenomenal collection of sea shanties and sailing songs performed by two of Great Britain's most outstanding musicologists. MacColl recorded a great deal during his career, which is fortunate, though he might well be best remembered by some for writing "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Lloyd performed a great deal and was highly regarded for his research and his attention to old, almost-lost songs, but his recordings are sadly few in number, and mostly unavailable -- there are a few songs on CD via a Riverside reissue, a cut on a Rhino compilation, and this Tradition reissue. Some of the songs included in this recording are familiar; "The Handsome Cabin Boy" has been recorded many a time, with notable performances including one by Kate Bush. Many songs are less familiar, however, and are quite deserving ...

Steve Benbow music CDs One of the greatest sea-shanty recordings ever made, and probably the only one ever to get endorsements from the likes of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl, backed by Alf Edwards (concertina), Ralph Rinzler (guitar, banjo, mandolin), and Steve Benbow (guitar), perform 16 sea shanties, including "Row Bullies Row," "Old Billy Riley," "Handsome Cabin Boy," "South Australia," "Do Me Ama," and "Jack Tar," in their most honest, authentic forms, ...
