Stars Are Out CD (2009)
Tony Goddess albums The second album by Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles dials back on the alt-country twang of their debut in favor of a pleasantly retro sound that recalls the first wave of country-influenced indie rockers, such as Lone Justice, the Long Ryders, and Green On Red. Borges and her crew are unafraid of being commercial, however: a ...

Pop Has Freed Us CD (2003)
Tony Goddess songs Papas Fritas' brand of pop is charming, innocent, and drawn from classic sources as diverse as the Beach Boys, '70s AM radio, Fleetwood Mac, and classic U.S. indie pop. Well, maybe those aren't the most diverse sources, but the group takes them and creates a varied and invigorating sound. Tony Goddess and Shivika Asthana's open-hearted, artless vocals ...

Run All Night CD (2006)
Tony Goddess albums The feisty singer-songwriter Rachael Cantu displays a fine way with a catchy pop tune on her debut CD EP, where she's backed by a small but highly skilled band as well as her own acoustic guitar, and where the sexy, high-spirited romp of "Saturday" contrasts with the breathy, Rickie Lee Jones-like "This Breath Won't Hold," and the ...

Helioself CD (1997)
Tony Goddess CD discography 1997's HELIOSELF is Papas Fritas' second album. Since recording its debut, the trio had relocated to the North Shore of Boston and set up a rehearsal and recording space in an old schoolhouse. Again, Papas Fritas self-recorded the music and took the resulting tracks into a full-service studio for mixing and sweetening. The results are more expansive ...

Alpacas Orgling CD (2006)
Tony Goddess discography Alpacas Orgling is the sort of record that drives people who dislike the contemporary power pop underground scene absolutely out of their heads with rage. If those three letters look familiar, that's entirely by design: LEO is an unabashed re-creation of the sound of vintage late-'70s Electric Light Orchestra on an indie rock budget. The album's mastermind ...

Papas Fritas CD (1995)
Tony Goddess CD discography Papas Fritas are a pop-loving trio from the Boston area. They recorded their self-titled debut in their practice space (then, wisely, took it into a legit studio for mixing and sweetening). The set here is a glorious baker's dozen of sweet pop confection, with just enough edge to keep things ...

Buildings And Grounds CD (2000)
Tony Goddess discography BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS is an album full of fun-loving mega-pop from everyone's favorite fun-loving mega-nerds. This ear candy is so rich and satisfying it'll send you scrambling for a syringe full of insulin. "People Say," for instance, is a slice of pure Lindsey Buckingham that's as catchy and dreamy as anything Fleetwood Mac has ever recorded. One of the most arresting aspects of this band is Shivika Asthana's singing, which is undercut by Goddess' endearingly nerdy rasp. If you haven't been converted by Papas Fritas, BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS is likely to do it. Pop has freed them and it'll free you.
