Torbjorn Hultcrantz discography The second of five CDs taken from a gig by Bud Powell in Stockholm in which he was joined by a pair of obscure local players (bassist Torbjorn Hultcrantz and drummer Sune Spangberg) has its strong moments. Highlights include Thelonious Monk's "Hackensack," "Moose the Mooche," "Star Eyes" and particularly a 15-minute version of Oscar Pettiford's "Blues in the Closet." The entire series is worth picking up by listeners who enjoy bop-based piano; Powell is generally in fine form. ~ Scott Yanow Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); Torbjorn Hultcrantz (bass); Sune Spangberg (drums).

Torbjorn Hultcrantz CD discography Previously unavailable performances from the much-discussed 1962 Stockholm session. This should have been a memorable and possibly innovative session since this CD reissue features the avant-garde tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler interpreting four standards ("Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Moanin'" and "Good Bait"). Unfortunately, the Swedish sidemen (bassist Torbjorn Hultcrantz and drummer Sune Spangberg) completely ignore what Ayler is playing and just act as if they were backing a conventional bop musician. The lack of communication between the musicians defeats this effort, although Ayler collectors will find the results quite interesting. ~ Scott Yanow Personnel includes: Albert Ayler (tenor saxophone); Torbjorn Hultcrantz (bass); Sune Spangberg (drums).

Torbjorn Hultcrantz albums Ake Johansson is a superior bebop pianist from Sweden. His main influence is Bud Powell, but he is open to more modern influences, too, including that of Bill Evans. On this excellent trio date from 1977 with bassist Torbjorn Hultcrantz and drummer Leif Wennerström, Johansson contributes four originals (including the medium-tempo bop-ish blues "Taxi 424" and "A Tribute to Bud") before launching into four standards. Hultcrantz and Wennerström offer tasteful but stimulating support while Johansson displays the ability to play chorus after chorus of inventive ideas. His playing on "Just Friends" is state-of-the-art bebop and by itself a good reason to acquire this enjoyable CD. ~ Scott Yanow Liner Note Author: Lars Westin. Recording information: Studio 4, The Swedish Radio (02/10/1977). Photographer: Gunnar Holmberg. Personnel: Ake Johansson (piano); Torbjorn Hultcrantz (bass); Leif Wennerstrom (drums). Personnel: Ake Johansson (piano); Leif Wennerström (drums).
