One Day I'll Be on Time CD (2001)
Jason Soares CD discography When he's not performing with San Diego-based post-rock outfit Tristeza, guitarist Jimmy LaValle devotes his time to solo recordings released under the name the Album Leaf. LaValle's sophomore release, ONE DAY I'LL BE ON TIME, follows in the footsteps of his debut, AN ORCHESTRATED RISE TO FALL, offering up minimal, meditative instrumentals that seem to stretch out over space and time. Simple patterns couched in an atmospheric wash are stated and evolved through repetition on piano, bass, drums, and, most centrally, LaValle's guitar.
LaValle's work is impressionistic and often cinematic. His spare, thoughtful music bears a kinship to the avant folk of John Fahey and the early ambient work of Brian Eno. On the basis of these comparisons alone, ONE DAY I'LL BE ON TIME is worth a listen, and will be of particular interest to fans of spare, hypnotic instrumental music.

Born to Be a Motorcycle CD (2005)
Jason Soares albums Born to Be a Motorcycle is the recorded debut of Bunky, the much-loved San Diego indie pop band created by Rafter Roberts and Emily Joyce. And what's not to love, really? Joyce's vocals are fun-loving enough to suggest the easy-to-follow sound of children's singalong records, but like Hilarie Sidney of the Apples in Stereo and the High Water Marks, Joyce's bright tone is tied to a winking adultness. Bunky's music follows suit. Jaunty melodies get thrashed by blasts of distortion, and keys, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and assorted other noises ("yelps" and "whooooo"s, for example) appear in the most unpredictable places. "Yes/No," "Baba," and "Glass of Water" are haphazard lurches of sweet/cynical ...

To the Innocent CD (2000)
Jason Soares music CDs The indie world breeds numerous four-band, self-produced, writer/musician auteurs, and perhaps Rob Crow is one of the most underrated. On To the Innocent, Crow plays vocals and guitars along with Elea Tenuta, his partner from the marginally popular Heavy Vegetable. Here the two assemble soft melodies and meticulous guitar work, along with cheap rhythm machines, to create a hovering symphony of understatement. Crow's gift is his knack for subtlety, which he rides endlessly on To the Innocent. Tracks like "Big Dumb Animal" exemplify this lo-fi aesthetic while accentuating the slow beauty of Crow's instrumental sensibility. What's most impressive is ...

Systems Of Social Recalibration CD (2002)
Jason Soares songs A beautifully textured album that falls somewhere between glitch pop and Boards of Canada's bucolic electronica, Systems of Social Recalibration layers thick, synthesized melodies with slippery, ticking beats. On "Level 4.2," Aspects of Physics uses acoustic guitars mindlessly strumming beneath dancing electronics to cinematic effect. On "S.id," Aspects of Physics works an old Commodore 64 sound interface device to create a wonderfully damaged symphony of blips and crunches -- something like Mogwai's music if it was composed on a vintage computer. "Everything Else We Must Pass Over in Silence" chimes and groans like Iceland's Múm, maybe one of Aspects ...
