Originally released in their native Indonesia in 2005 and picked up by the American indie label Minty Fresh in 2007, the debut album by the Jakarta-based sextet White Shoes and the Couples Company blends 1930s-vintage jazz influences with the sort of mod, garage-influenced proto-punk that swept Asian youth in the 1960s and is now familiar to collectors through the many grey-market collections of obscure singles. Playful, catchy, and immensely tuneful, these songs recall such vintage nostalgia merchants as Spanky and Our Gang, the Sopwith Camel, and Harpers Bizarre, given a unique Southeast Asian twist.
