Doug Lazy Gettin' Crazy CD (1987)
Doug Lazy albums When hardcore rappers were making records for the streets in the early 1990s, Doug Lazy aimed at the dance floor. Not someone who was terribly well known, Lazy was mainly interested in hip-house, a style in which MCs rap over house-music tracks. Doug Lazy Gettin' Crazy isn't earth-shattering, but it's a decent party album that has its share of catchy and infectious grooves. While hardcore rappers were favoring slow, hard tracks, hypnotic jams like "Ahh Get It," "Can't Get Enough" and "Funky Beat" are taken at a fast and very danceable tempo. Consequently, Lazy was more likely to appeal to Inner City and Black Box fans than followers of Public Enemy or Boogie Down Productions. Hip-hop's hardcore tended to dismiss club-oriented artists like Lazy, but this CD proves that he definitely had solid rapping skills. Hip-house on the whole tends to be predictable, and Lazy is no exception. But despite the style's obvious limitations, Doug Lazy Gettin' Crazy can certainly be fun on the dance floor. ~ Alex Henderson
