Grand Archives CD discography Fronted by singer/guitarist Mat Brooke (ex-Band of Horses and Carissa's Weird), Grand Archives hit the ground running on their 2008 self-titled Sub Pop debut, unfurling compelling vocal harmonies, dreamy melodies, and subtle rhythms. Considerably less rocked-out than Band of Horses, the Seattle-based ensemble often calls to mind an indie-rock Byrds, with most of the quintet sharing singing duties, and with bright, airy arrangements informing almost every song on the album (see the breezy "Miniature Birds" and the pleasantly drifting "Sleepdriving"). One of the most impressive and assured offerings of early '08, GRAND ARCHIVES bodes well for Brooke and his talented bandmates. Audio Mixer: Greg Calbi. Recording information: Four Sticks Studio, Seattle, WA; Mysterious Red X Studio, Seattle, WA; Paradise Sound, Index, WA. Photographer: Whitney Etter. Grand Archives: Ron Lewis (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Jeff Montano (vocals, bass guitar); Curtis Hall (vocals, drums, percussion); Thomas Wright (guitar); Mat Brooke. Grand Archives albums Grand Archives' second album reprises the sound of their 2008 debut, from the emphasis on rich vocal harmonies to the leisurely strum of their instruments. Founding member Ron Lewis left the lineup several months before this album's release, choosing to blaze a slightly livelier path with the Shins instead. Even so, the band sounds remarkably unchanged throughout Keep in Mind Frankenstein, whose track list makes room for intimate numbers as well as faster, campfire-worthy tracks. As before, Grand Archives sound best whenever the members' voices are combined, and they stack their harmonies high on songs like "Silver Amongst the Gold" and "Oslo Novelist." "Lazy Bones" stands out as perhaps the most moving number, with ambient guitar noise and keyboard drones providing a gorgeous setting for the vocals, while "Siren Echo Valley (Part 2)" abandons vocals altogether, focusing instead on the band's ability to create an instrumental track worthy of spaghetti western cinema. There are small diversions from the formula, of course -- a Theremin shows up during several tracks, and Sera Cahoone duets with Mat Brooke on the sadly beautiful "Siren Echo Valley (Part 1)" -- but Frankenstein is essentially ...

Grand Archives Biography

Grand Archives CD discography Initially called simply Archives, Artist featured members of Carissa's Wierd (yes, that's how they spelled it) and Band of Horses. With a sound inspired by such '70s acts as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Eagles (complete with multi-part harmonies), the band made their live debut during the spring of 2007. They subsequently toured with Modest Mouse while preparing their self-titled debut album for Sub Pop, which the label released in February 2008. Keep in Mind Frankenstein followed one year later, featuring a similarly harmony-rich sound as its predecessor. ~ Stewart Mason
