Retribution Gospel Choir music CDs Alan Sparhawk, leader of sadcore kings Low, goes from a whisper to a scream--literally--on his extracurricular project Retribution Gospel Choir. While his old band was all about hushed vocals and low-key arrangements that wafted into the ear like a gentle breeze, the first RGC album goes in the opposite direction. Loud, dirty guitars, pounding drums, and from-the-gut singing are the order of the day here. Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon mainman Mark Kozelek produced the self-titled album, which makes sense when you consider that some of the generally laconic Kozelek's finest moments have been similarly Crazy Horse-esque grungy desert-rock rampages. While Sparhawk has turned up the volume, most of the tunes here still move at a rather glacial pace, so fans of his former work should not be totally at sea. Composer: Alan Sparhawk. Instead, the three-piece (Low's lineup with drummer Eric Pollard subbed in for Mimi Parker) makes music in a more rock-oriented style -- imagine a plodding Field Music or a beefed-up Kings of Leon. Their second album, aptly titled 2, is a blend of several types of rock: indie rock, alternative rock, American roots rock, and `70s rock, with glimmering three-part harmonies that often feel fitting for an active radio single.
