Joplin Bouquet/The Genius of Scott Joplin CD
In 1958 ragtime was largely a lost art. The few pianists that played music from the ragtime era (1899-1915) either turned it into jazz, cornball honky tonk or slapdash vehicles for virtuosity. In contrast, this LP has one of the first ragtime piano solo sessions that would have gained the approval of Scott Joplin. Ann Charters is heard performing a dozen of Joplin's best rags, sticking to the music and the proper tempos but also giving the classic compositions life. Among the songs on her LP (which has the subtitle of "Scott Joplin's Rags for Flowers and Leaves, With Some Pleasant Moments of Euphonic Sounds") are "Fig Leaf Rag," "Sunflower Slow Drag," "Euphonic Sounds," "Pleasant Moments" and, of course, "Maple Leaf Rag." ~ Scott Yanow
