Derivative Derivative CD (2009)
CD $16.65 Buy It  Details
Remora CD discography "This music is not complicated by any means, but the musician has an innate sense of how to make it sound good."~ RobosexualSince 1996 Remora's Brian John Mitchell has been pursuing his own flavor of guitar terrorism & songwriting while drawing comparisons to the likes of Tom Verlaine, Roy Montgomery, David Pearce, & Hayden. Remora's sound has been diverse over the years with a different focus on each release, from the acoustic guitar driven Alcohol EPs (2002), to the a cappella EP songs i sing (2007), to the loop driven Ambient Drones for One Guitar (2000), to the post apocalyptic pop of Enamored (2005). Derivative is Remora's first full length since 2005's Enamored. Remora's been much more active live over the past few years & as a result the new album is filled with solos & overwhelming swells of guitar sound meant to fill a bar over any crowd noise. It showcases the most aggressive side of Remora caught on disc. Derivative is a collection of loop driven songs where the initial loops were built off of short hooks from some of Mitchell's favorite songs. The songs are derived from hits by Journey & Blue Oyster Cult as well as less known personal favorites by Pere Ubu, Hefner, & Warrior Soul. The musical results are both instantly familiar & brand new. If you are into aggressive ambient guitar work or if you just sit around daydreaming about things like Justin Broadrick (Jesu) covering Bob Dylan or Aidan Baker (Nadja) working through a Joe Jackson song (& who doesn't?), then Derivative's for you.
Scars Bring Hope Scars Bring Hope CD (2011)
CD $13.15 Buy It  Details
Remora albums Somehow Remora has managed to survive fifteen years straddling between post rock, drone, & post-apocalyptic pop. While best known for minimalist guitar riffs & picking patterns looped & reverbed out, there have been entire releases focused on americana, a cappella, & electro. So with any new Remora release one is left wondering exactly what to expect. On Scars Bring Hope Remora's Brian John Mitchell is guided by the hands of engineer & producer Brian Lea McKenzie (Electric Bird Noise) to make the most polished ...
Mecha Mecha CD (2010)

Remora music CDs At twenty he escaped the gladiatorial pits & started an insurgency against his Martian captors. He spent eight years freeing slaves & building an army before meeting the woman who convinced him to lay down his weapons & live in peace in the wilderness. It had been two years since he'd given up being a revolutionary for the woman when he came home to her dead body. As much as her love had destroyed his world before, the sudden lack of it destroyed it again. There was no hope for a revolution anymore, just the chance to live under Martian slavery. Because of his mind (whether overly proficient or deficient, who is to say?), he ...

Enamored Enamored CD (2005)

Remora songs The first Remora album in some years, Enamored finds its main man (and Silber Records honcho) Brian John Mitchell steering away from blissout -- or a more violent version of same -- in favor of generally lower-key songs in a murmuring, melancholic vein. If anyone is Mitchell's vocal forebear on Enamored, it might often be, say, Leonard Cohen or Calvin Johnson, a dark but not overbearing approach, though set against lovely arrangements that call to mind the most delicate moments of bands like Flying Saucer Attack, late-period Slowdive, or the Durutti Column. The opening song sets a basic template, with bass and vocals leading the way before a spiraling guitar part slowly descends from the ...
