Press Start Press Start CD (2008)
CD $13.99 Buy It  Details
Megadrives albums Review for The Megadrives debut album "Press Start": Hailing from Baltimore, MD, the laptop duo of K-Rai and Sheephead, collectively known as The Megadrives, are making waves in the underground techno/electro scene. While luminaries of the style like Meat Beat Manifesto and The Crystal Method are still making music and doing their best to continue pushing the envelope, there's something to be said for a group of budding young talents picking up the pace and creating their own brand of electrified genre-bending dance music, keeping the music fresh while familiar, and evolving the style without sacrificing the elements that defined past successes. However, with the release of the Press Start debut, The Megadrives arrive with a clean slate to present their brand of intricately crafted, expansive dance music to a scene in desperate need of some new heroes. A distorted electronic squeak repeats throughout the opening title track like a malfunctioning klaxon, and with a simple but tense arrangement of synth arpeggios and gritty breakbeats, we are plunged into The Megadrives' frantic style of electro with a bang. "Hot Damn" is appropriately named as a subdued analog-ish bass pulse underscores a series of overdriven breaks and twittering atmospheric effects, making for a truly enjoyable track that will have ravers dancing 'til dawn. The same can be said of the bristling techno of "Aw Yeah" with its stereo pans of oscillating textures, the huge beats and layers of percolating synths on "Ghetto Space Eater," and the massively reverberating trip-hop styling of "Scenima." Vocal samples are interspersed throughout Press Start in lieu of an actual vocal performance, but it's not until "Somethin' ta Feel" that any of them are given a melodic edge with a catchy if tried and true bass line that would surely make the track a perfect club staple, while closing track "Sit Back" slows the pace down with a mellow piece of ambient trip-hop and echoed vocal snippets that comes across as a fusion of Massive Attack's more upbeat moments with Kraftwerk's early analog experiments. Of course, such descriptions simply can't do justice to the overall impact of the music. To read this review, ...

Megadrives music CDs The Megadrives - Category: Electronica - Album: Continue - Stars: 4Blurb: Running the gamut from trance to dub to breakbeat, The Megadrives release an appealing sophomore album that takes their diverse style even further. As technology moves forward into an age where convenience and speed are seemingly essential, the abundance of laptop DJs and artists to emerge has been staggering. As the state of the art calls for a greater reliance on software, it should come as no surprise to see a group like The Megadrives taking full advantage of the trend. Based in Baltimore, MD, the duo of K-Rai and Sheephead have for the past several years been ...
